Okay, somebody school me please. I recently opened a bottle of Laphroig on recommendation from a friend. He said a lumber jack looking, fire loving guy like me should be drinking it. I concur. Now I can't get enough of the smoky peat, and was wondering if there was anything smokier and peatier out there, and what names I should be looking for.

Bruichladdich Octomore is what you are looking for.

You're going to hard pressed to find anything more smoky and peaty that is affordable. The octomore is where you'll have to be but they are $200-$300+ a bottle.

I love anything by Ardbeg and Laphroaig and they are more in my price range. Lagavulin also has some good ones but they aren't quite as in your face with peat and smoke. Read up and learn more about all the distilleries on the island of Islay(eye-lah). Most of the whiskies from the island will have some peat influence although not all of them are peat smoked. Makes my mouth water just thinking about them!! Enjoy!

For lovers of Laphroaig I would add Talisker to the list. Ardbeg gets my biggest recommendation, though.

Ardbeg Uigeadail is my favorite islay whiskey. I also love the dark cove. I'm hoping to score the new Kelpie but it will take some searching.

All,

Thank you for the knowledge. I'll start trying some of the above mentioned Islay's. In other news, my boys have taken to using the packaging tubes as light sabers and smacking each other with them!

I scored an Ardbeg Dark Cove Committee release recently. I haven't cracked it yet but since its a one time only release, I'm really glad I have it in my collection!

Had 12 yo Highland Park on Walburgisnacht last Sunday. It was GOOD!:)

I've had some bottles of it. It is one of the best ones easily available around here.

It is a very affordable good spirit. If you like the peat, smoke, and earthiness of highland park, venture into some ardbeg or laphroaig for another step up in smoke.

It was my wife's cousin's bottle. Same dude gave me that bottle of Bowmore Small Batch on my Birthday. Good fella.

Ardbeg is my favourite brand and I like Laphroaig very much as well.

Ardbeg is elite. I tasted recently 12 years Bowmore, smoked, really not bad. Jameson Caskmates is a very decent one for the price. Bourbons - Bulleit seemed to be the best I tasted so far, Jim Beam Choice is a runner-up. From time to time I buy our local "Canadian club" small batch classic 12, surprisingly well for the 18 usd price tag.

There are a ton more bourbons better than those 2.... I'm assuming if you like bulleit you like a higher rye bourbon. Try 4 roses small batch or single barrel or Old Granddad bottled in bond

Woodford Reserve Bourbon. Great over ice, neat, or in tea for breakfast when I'm trying to carpet bomb bugs before they get dug in.

I was into the Islay peats for while, but lost the taste for them. Oddly, I also like vodka on occasion by itself over ice.

I enjoy the Michter's line of bourbon; the rye is possibly my favorite bourbon ever. Of course, I'm quite promiscuous regarding bourbon ;)

Emptied Bowmore Small Batch bottle. Then I bought Islay Mist 0,7 l bottle and emptied it too. It was a decent blended stuff. A little immature and spirity, but slight notes of smoke and tar helped. Got Nikka Whisky From The Barrel alc. 51,4 as a souvenir.

Awesome!. I haven't had any of those but have had Nikka coffey grain and it tasted very similar to bourbon
