Hello friends,

I’ve only been doing Simple & Sinister consistently for a couple weeks now. I’m not sure if anyone else does this, but I created a custom workout timer with the “Seconds” app that has been working very well for me. It keeps things moving so I don’t slack off, it counts me down when it’s time to switch sides and has helped me keep a consistent pace. If you don’t have the app I highly recommend it, it’s almost like having a coach in your back pocket. I’ve uploaded my custom timer for your to import if you do have the app and want to try it out. You can tweak it in any way you’d like for yourself. I’d love to hear your feedback if you do try it out and/or how you changed it for your own sessions. Hope this helps! Thanks!

Although doing S&S by a clock can work, it isn't necessarily the best approach. Make sure that you calibrate you interval so that you are recovering sufficiently between sets throughout the whole session. If you use the same rest interval length throughout the session, it should feel way too long at the beginning in order to be sufficient at the end.

BTW, I've tried out about 20 different android timer apps (including the one linked above), and my favorite by far is Impetus Interval Timer. I find the interface very simple to use for the simple functions I use it for, but it's ridiculously customizable if you need it to be, and the free version is much less crippled/more full-featured than any other I've tried.

Have you tried practicing S&S by feel rather than by time? I find that doing so allows me to rest sufficiently between sets without making the session much longer (30-45 mins depending on the weights used).

Of course, if you have a specific goal, timing may be required.

I find that doing my S&S sessions by “feel” I can actually better know when I’m ready to test and move up to the next bell.

By feel = sometimes I take too much rest, others not enough
By time = sometimes I take too much rest, others not enough
By heart rate = as close to ideal as I can get

I use heart rate for “feel.” Once I start I don’t fall below 100/bpm.

Hi every body,

Just wanted to give my thoughts on the topic. I used seconds pro to pass my snatch test since I had to send in the video for my cert and it definitely helped me to keep my pace and stay on track so to speak. So I believe it makes absolutely sense to time your practice if you want to stay within a specific time frame. I would recommend it especially if you are nearing a “test day”. In the beginning of a cycle I agree to train more by feel or to take longer rest periods between the intervals.

So thank you for sharing your timer. I will definitely check it out !

Me too. I have the feeling that gymboss did themselves no favor. The app is so good, I wonder who‘s buying the hardware any longer.o_O
Yes!
Especially after the introduction of those "smartphone running/fitness armstraps".
I still own one of the old gymboss things that you can attach to your clothes, but never used it since I got a smartphone and the gymboss app years ago.
It's even easier to work with the app than the physical thing.

I use the seconds app. I mostly use it emom every minute on the minute.
But I have used it to slowly shorten my time on the S&S program too.
When I use the same size bell for training, then waving the time works for higher and lower intensity, instead of weight or volume.
When I have trained without a timer, I end up taking twice as long to train. As I am prone to daydreaming!

Is witched from the app to the „real thing“.

Since I train with HR strap and display my HR info on my phone, I don’t want to switch all the time.

Plus, I prefer the haptic of the buttons and all. Also used the Gymboss for jogging and really enjoyed not having to take my phone with me. Kind of liberating.

Yes, sort of interval training, like 60s running and then 20 seconds walking. Same for jump rope, where I did 40s jumping, then 20s walking around.

Nice, this is similar to my actual running plan right now. Since I damaged one of my achilles tendons a few years ago I get problems when I have longer times under tension. So I switch 2 minutes running with 40 seconds walking to release tension. Started with 40/20 secs but there is slow improvements. With this method I can run up to 8k free of symptoms whereas I can only run uninterrupted 4k under pain.
