Kettlebell Observations with "heavy" TGU

Hi all,

I'm currently in the middle of my 3rd week of S&S, and have been doing 1H swings and TGU primarily with 24kg. After completing TGU 1/1 x 5 in 8:30, I decided that it was time to up the load to 32kg. This had been a kettlebell use primarily for 2H swing and goblet squats and I must admit, the task to complete TGU with a 32 seemed daunting.

I put my worries aside this morning after I did my first set with the 24kg, and made the switch to the 32. It felt heavy with the floor press and I almost regretted my decision. As soon as I made the transitional roll onto my elbow and felt the tension, I knew that I was going to crush this. I only performed one set per side before switching back, but I amazed myself this morning.

One major observation I noticed, and it goes along with what I've been reading about on the forums, the heavier load actually made me perform every step better that with the 24. I felt a lot more tension throughout all the movements and had my lats engaged that had been somewhat challenging with a lighter load.

I'll keep practicing the 1 set for the next week or so, but now I feel I have the mental strength to push through.

James, congrats. For me the jump from 24 to a 32 was a bit much so I got a 28, which has been a great bridge. But it’s great that you didn’t need a middle bell.

I had a similar feeling when transitioning from 32 to 40. When I jumped from 24 to 32, IIRC, it was more challenging and I had to start with only the possitive of the TGU (ie, I didnt do the get-down). Congrats and keep it up!

Nice! A get up is a marvelous and I do agree that heavyweight is a good teacher. Though I think there are hidden benefits for doing say 2-4 get ups in a row with a lighter weight.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

@Pavel Macek Thanks for the response! That's exactly was I started to do now that I met my timed goal with the 24. My sets now are 24, 32, 24, 24, 24 and what I've been doing with the sets using the 24, is spending more time under tension, moving through the transitions slow and controlled as well as spending 5 seconds in each position

I'll have to keep myself in check and not progress too quickly now that the confidence has boosted.
