Always Be Smashing

Hey Hulk, just catching up on your training entries.
Well done and I really like what you are doing with the strength training and then working in S+S!
I think it is sort of the same but different as I am doing, but your is much cooler!

Keep up the great work and enjoy the summer!

well done man!

Thanks sir!

S&S is great for getting generally strong, of course, but there's certainly room to add if you have some extra energy. I think pullups and some kind of push (even just pushups) round it out nicely. Anyways, I'm in a block now where, in principle, I'm trying to build up some volume in calisthenics and running, and S&S adds in nicely to those. Keep having hiccups in the training, though.

but your is much cooler!

It's all in the attitude.

Karate. Teaching, so a little low-key.

After that, things go sideways again. Had a flight out to Chicago for a little family reunion & "celebration of life" - my grandma passed at 94 in the Spring, not unexpected, and she was very clear that she didn't want a "funeral". I've got a mess of aunts/uncles/cousins on that side. Good to see everybody, but no training, largely thanks to red-eye flights and lack of sleep.

Shortly afterwards, on another plane to Japan, for business. At least got in a couple of sessions at the hotel there.

06/13 06:00

Circuit x8
- 0.5m treadmill walk/run
- Pushups x10
- Flat frog raise x10
- 6-way lunge
- Horizontal pullups x5

06/14 07:00

Circuit x16
- 0.25m treadmill walk/run
- Burpees x3

That was all just way too much time on a plane. When I finally got home, I had a knot in my back, and a nice head cold. And yet another plane ride coming up soon. Will be playing things by ear for a while.

Spartan is just 4 weeks away... don't exactly feel like my training is "peaking", but ce la vie.

Woke up with the knot in my back, but opted to grind through it. Stayed with me until after breakfast.

First time I've felt good enough to get in a solid session in a while! Definitely a little weak, but solid enough. Hopefully this helps shake of the airplane rides.

Finally back home after a week of vacation in Mexico. Brought home several pounds of tequila-powered belly fat as a souvenir

First time I've done EYFS two days in a row in quite a while - definitely noticed some fatigue in the adductors. Feels like it's time for more weight on the SLDL, maybe the kneeling lunge too.

No evening session due to baseball game.

06/28 06:00

60min treadmill walk / run 4.5m

Tough run - gotta reacclimate to the altitude or something.

Circuit x8
- 0.25m treadmill walk / run

Spartan race is just 2 weeks away. Will stick with the running / calisthenics until then... and I figure I'll need a recovery week after that. Then it'll finally be time to get back to lifting heavy.

06/29 19:00

GSQT 3x5 40,48,28 with curl
Halo 3x5 24,20,20
Bridge 3x5, elevated feet on 3rd set
KB snatch 26x4 32 EMOM
TGU 5x1 x side 40

Snatches felt great. TGUs felt like getting pummeled with a golf club.

The fatigue from EMOM sessions really just creeps up on you. You can sustain pretty high effort for a long time, and then suddenly you drop off the edge and there just isn't anything left. But that kettlebell ain't gonna get itself up...

Updates for today:
- SLDL 20#
- Kneeling lunge 24

Feels like I could up the cossacks as well, but I'll let these changes settle in for a few weeks first.

Circuit x4
- Pushups x12
- TRX face pulls x12
- Hanging knee raise x9
- BW squat x12

Haven't had the beast out in a while, and she beat me up today. This was exhausting.

07/03 21:00

Treadmill intervals x6
- 1min run 8.0
- walk @ 4.0 until HR in Z3
KB snatch 16x2 40
Bent press 5x2 24
Pushups 5x10
- 20s hang between sets

We're fond of saying that the battle for weight loss is won in the kitchen, and I believe it. But, for me at least, I also believe that cutting weight demands intensity - some brutal sessions that leave you wiped out. I've been forgoing high-intensity work in this cycle in favor of trying to get more endurance work, and I feel like I'm getting a little bit of the "skinny fat" feeling. Of course, at 240#, I can't really lay claim to skinny, so I guess I'm just feeling fat. :p

So, inspired by that feeling, and by @Philippe Geoffrion barbell snatch video, I was in the mood for some brutality this session. Throwing the 40 around was very satisfying.

Yet again, life is interfering with my plans to become the ultimate warrior.

No training tonight due to my son's baseball game running long. Spartan race is supposed to be on Saturday, but we're in the playoffs for baseball, and we've won two in a row, meaning, with any luck, we'll be playing for the championship on Saturday. So, have to put the Spartan off.

But, my son is playing like a rock star at catcher. Totally worth it.
