Other/Mixed Mountain Strong

Other strength modalities (e.g., Clubs), mixed strength modalities (e.g., combined kettlebell and barbell), other goals (flexibility)
Hello,

To a certain extent, same applies with martial arts. As a former judo player, judo as an OG is completely altered and very different from the beginnings

Personally I agree with the climbing comments.

I'd like the Olympics to become more about individual competitors and get rid of the team sports.

Starting with Rugby, football (soccer), tennis (I know it's not a team sport). They already have massively successful world cup events, adding them into the OG is ridiculous.

Don't get me started on golf being in the OG...really???

Rant over :)

Hello,

If some of us are interested in both running and rucking, maybe this link can be interesting:

I did the first routine a while ago with good results.

Just checking in to see how everyone’s summer adventures are going. I’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to run, ride and hike around Stratton VT for the past few days. Nothing serious but fun nonetheless. Hope that all is well with the SF mountain community.

@Alaska80 - those pictures are heaven on earth! (or non religious equivalent)

I must get into the hills in NZ and send you some pics. It's not quite the land mass of Alaska ? but a few similarities they share

Would love to see some NZ mountain experiences. It is on my bucket list to get there and do some trekking.
You would love it! It has really different feel to lots of other places in the world.

When COVID is over we'll have to do a house swap for a couple of months ?

I'm 50 km's from the Southern Alps....

Hello,

If it may help, this comes from Dan John's last podcast:

"In Season" Strength.

An observation and a question.

My "season" has been going strong for about a month now. I average only one strength and one strength endurance workout per week. I mix in cardio where I can, fitness is an all day activity for me. On my 3-4 day weekends I have been averaging 30-50 miles with heavy loads in the mountains. By heavy I mean dragging 500+lb rafts up glacial rivers then carrying 50-100 lbs over mountainous terrain for some miles and some elevation. One interesting observation is that it seems when I come back from these trips the Monday after my deadlift goes through the roof. It feels strong and fluid and I have seen as much as a 20lb increase from one 7 day trip. All this is done on minimal calorie intake as well, I average about 2200 calories per day and am easily burning in excess of 5000, yet I have no muscle wasting.

Has anyone ever noticed anything similar?

Pretty cool about the DL performance!
I have never noticed any muscle wasting on short trips (less than a week) but I have on longer trips.
Unlike your experience I do (usually) notice some performance degradation after a hard trip.

Hello,

I notice a performance degredation mostly with pull ups, after roughly 1 week. Otherwise, if I remember well, DL strength is lost pretty slowly. Plus it does not need a lot of volume to be improved. Squats decrease faster. When I do not DL (or hinge) for a while (up to 6 to 8 weeks), I do not notice a decrease in performance. Somehow, doing core work and uniltarel leg work (run, lunge, carry, pistol squat) can even improve the DL.

Im about to walk up my first mountain, snowdonia in the uk.
Im going to take the easiest route as ive not done anything like it before and im going with my daughter whos 19.

I struggle to fit everything in with work and a young family, ive been alternating jump rope bodyweight circuits and strength aerobics 3 times a week, brisk walking for 45mins after work 5 days a week and one long hike or bike ride on the weekends....hopefully ill be ok getting up snowden!

Cant wait to do it though, already looking forward to the tougher routes!

The worst bit is the first stretch and the potential queues.
Next Scafell Pike...!
