Kettlebell Geoff Neupert asks for beta testers for THE GiANT X and KETTLEBELL MAXIMORUM

I will start Maximorum in about a week and one question comes up. What would you consider strong legs (to choose the right option)?

I guess you will feel it after the first workouts - I decided not to opt in for strong legs and I am happy. The first day after the snatches & C+P/Sq I had some jelly legs. It‘s good to have an option for more volume if I feel that my legs outgrow my upper body.

I think it depends on your upper lower strength gap
i am starting today with 2x20 which is my 5 rep max for pressing but something way more for squats
looking at the plan i could go for the strong legs option
but i think i will go for the original version and focus more on pressing atleast for the first phase

I looked at that option as well. I traditionally have been decent at squatting after years of barbell squats etc but I’m glad I didn’t take that option. In saying that I’m working this around BJJ so I really want to avoid any DOMS or feeling of fatigue that day after. Maybe on a second run of Maximorum I might “think about it”
Good luck in your training.

I chose to run the "strong" variation. When I tested, 28k was my 5RM for the DCP, but I got a pretty easy 10 on the DFS so I figured strong was the way to go. I just finished week 2 and it's definitely getting tough as the reps are climbing, but I'm feeling good and total reps have gone up each session so far.

Week 2 Maximorum done. 4 sessions completed alongside 2 BJJ and 11,000 step count.
-CP/Sq day with sets of 3 was challenging. Took ample rest to keep RPE manageable
-Trying to focus on powerful hip hinge with snatch as this seems to transfer over to BJJ practice.
- some evidence of increase in muscle in shoulders and back
- No issues with recovery as calories sitting around 3000
-Using P3 protocol as warm up cool down
-Have BJJ comp in Feb and want to drop to 97.5 kg for this. This will tie in with week 12 of this program so strength will not be an issue.
-Really like the way rep set up in terms of how it can wave up and down within the workout.
Onwards to week 3

Well, this sucks…my wife was sick with Covid for a second time over the thanksgiving holiday. I did everything I could to try and avoid it, but woke up with a sore throat today. It’s supposed to be week 3 of the Giant X for me. Although I feel good enough to train today I won’t. I’ve gone that route before and will be taking a pause. Hopefully I can take a few days off and then pick up where I left off.

Sorry, i meant to reply to @Kendosperling. The one you replied to @Xene

I opted for the double front squats, lifetime prs of 340lbs in the front squat, 365 back (estimated 405-415 during a phase i chose not to test and subsequently hit the 340fs next cycle) at175lbs body weight. On test day i hit 24kg for 4 reps on the double clean and press so on most days I'll use my 20s. Sometimes I have access to 45lb and 50lb doubles. I'll use the 50s on good days. So far so good. I love double kb front squats and a grind which they project to be deeper in the progression.

Yesterday i did day 2 of week 2 with 20s a. nd hit 40 press, 66 cleans and 78 front squat

If you can FSQ 10+ easy with your C+P 5RM, I'd consider that "strong legs."

But the keyword there is "easy."

It has to be a true "easy," not a "talk yourself into it being easy" after the fact.

Hope that helps.

Let me use myself as an example
I can squat for 10 reps a size up my 6-8 press RM so that's 2 sizes up my 12-16rm 90% of the time

However, my legs do not handle higher volume with that load so I also have to factor that in..

You can always add tempo and pause reps for squats vs jumping up the load

So far giant x2 seems to be working for me. Im slowly getting more overall reps in each workout with some waviness. One day ill set a new pr by 6 reps or so, next day ill fall back a bit, but overall its steady progress. Program seems to be waving itself without me attempting to do so.

I’ve found with all the Giant programs that I get more total reps on the medium days. The heavy days always require more rest and I end up with a few less sets.

Just my 2 cents but I personally think many overthink this stuff. Using a C+P 5RM for front squats certainly isn't "cutting corners" as the double bell FS is a pretty tough exercise in its own right. Holding the bells in the rack position provides quite an abundance of tension in the shoulders and upper back.

I have found that in doing a "Geoff Program " involving clean and presses and front squats using heavier bells for front squats was detrimental. Reason.....the holding of the heavier bells in the rack fir front squats added significantly to my shoulder fatigue which had an effect (or is it 'affect') on my presses. This in particular when you alternate between clean and presses and front squats. Using the same bells in my case still yielded overall gains.

Mileage varies of course.
