If your ring finger is substantially longer than your index finger, you have more genetic athletic potential.

If not....

Luckily, the health benefits of exercise don't care about how gifted you are:

Look at your fingers. Which is longer? Is it the index finger (the finger you use to point with— technically the second digit, or 2D, counting the thumb), or the ring finger (the fourth digit, or 4D)?
The relative length of the index and ring fingers is known as the digit ratio or the 2D:4D. For example, if your index finger is 2.9 inches (or 7.4 cm) long, and your ring finger is 3.1 inches (or 7.9 cm) long, your digit ratio is 0.935 (i.e., 2.9/3.1 or 7.4/7.9). Men typically have lower digit ratios (the ring finger in males is typically longer than the index finger) than females (the fingers are about the same length in females). The ratio does not change much with age.

In general, those with lower digit ratios—that is, those whose ring fingers are relatively longer than their pointers—are more likely to perform better across a very wide range of sports and athletic events. This was first illustrated in a detailed study of English professional football (soccer) players.

I don't believe that genetics matter that much in many sports. Specially in team sports like ice hockey or soccer. Smart, hard work and passion matters.. there are so many roles in team sports. You don't need to be the fastest, strongest or what ever. Maybe someone won't be good fit for striker, but he/she could be fine defender or goalie or goonie or what ever.
Well, to be fair there are many individual sports and sports like that basket ball where you have to have genetics for that sport. You can't train yourself longer and things like that. :D

I raise my finger in salute to those with longer digits! (please insert humourous emoticon here)

Have no time for research at the moment but, I recall reading that the longer digits is an indication of higher levels of (natural) testosterone during critical growth period early on in life.

Different horses for different courses.

Me too. Table mounted router got me one day. It also took some meat off the bottom side of the ring finger hence the longer nail, but if I cut it off much more it gets into the quick. Over 20 years in cabinet shop and one day I had a dumbass moment.
Sledge hammer, age 3, compliments of my 5 yr. old brother ( my fault ) When I got home from the hospital another older brother presented me, on a dinner plate, parts of my finger, in case I was hungry.
Lawn mower, summer job, age 17, rainy day, long grass, mowing a church, grass was sticking in the chute, I would take off the bag and clean out the chute, with my bare hand, lawn mower still running, it worked until it didn't. My bosses, two school teachers, not impressed. Went to hospital, got it stitched, then mowed more lawns. Note to self: Turn off mower.
