Nutrition Coffee and Coconut Oil=Bulletproof

Fat is very satiating, so it makes sense that a coffee that's very high in it would be satiating.

How do those of you who enjoy Bulletproof coffee approach your proteins? Do you have a lunch or dinner that's higher in protein? I was wondering about that as we travelled over the weekend. Deep thoughts, I know.

Hello,

You are right, it is always good to vary information source. I'm going to read your article ! Thanks ;)

Kind regards,

I can def see how coconut oil and coffee would work with IF or something like the 24hr diet as it def curbs my hunger and I NEED breakfast in the morn. I have used it with chicken for lunch and chicken for dinner but the wheels comes off after a while with boredom. I can definitely see the merits of it, just wouldn't spend lots of money on the high profile brands.

I wonder if any of the supposed side effects of the bullet proof coffee is due to the butter or people putting great gobs of butter and coconut oil in the coffee. I personally only use coconut oil and only a teaspoon or so.

What are the supposed side effects?

No side effects that I have noticed. Have not checked the scale but between this and working on double KB program again I got compliments about my physique. :D

Pure marketing hype. There's benefit to your energy levels because you're ingesting caffeine and fat....two substances that provide energy. This bulletproof guy is a total scam and I'm blown away with how bulletproof coffee has become some sort of magical elixir. Bulletproof guy uses large quantities of modafinil/provigil and the like and then extols the virtues of coffee and fat. Genius marketer though.

Bullet Proof is a mild ketogenic diet. BEWARE! Food effects vary person to person. I have a friend local to me who had softball sized tumor removed from her brain a few years ago and yes, quite malignant. She did NOT do chemo or radiation and instead went full on alt.med, found a Naturopath to guide her. Core of her treatment is hardcore keto diet. What has been found by pioneer researchers (Dominic P. D'Agostino and Dr. Thomas Seyfried) is that so long as ratio of ketone:glucose in your blood is 1:1 or greater you are in the healing zone, more ketones-->deeper ketosis-->needed for more radical treatment but increased risk of side effects. D'Agostino, a powerlifter, like his about 1:1 or slightly higher only. My friend keeps hers very high.

That was all background. She found, bought, and now speaks for this plug and play, home breath ketone monitor

It is far cheaper and more accurate than any other method available to check what effects your diet is having on you.

The crux here is that despite all the PR and claims, she discovered that the coconut oil in her BulletProof coffee was causing a large glycemic effect in her body! Big enough to knock her right out of ketosis and back into glucose burning, cancer feeing metabolism. She switched to grass fed butter only and all is well.

So best not to make assumptions if you really want success. The numbers don't lie

@GeoffreyLevens, you say butter only.......is that butter in the coffee rather than coconut oil or butter only, ie no coffee? Hope the protocol works for your friend.....

Ive done the whole "bulletproof" thing and the jury is still out with me.... When I did it, I used grass-fed butter and mct oil.

This was very specific to her per measuring ketones:glucose ratio in her blood after eating. But it was that she needs to avoid coconut and just use butter, lard, etc. She doesn't do BulletProof, except the coffee recipe but rather goes fofr deep ketosis i.e. about 80% calories from fat and less than 30 grams total net carbs/day. To do it right, you need to go all Dr Science on it an monitor a lot of parameters which can get "off", thyroid, lipids, inflammation level, short and long term blood glucose, etc. It is working amazingly well for her. Funny because I eat about the opposite i.e. very high carb (complex only) fairly low fat.

Here's her site just to complete the picture

@GeoffreyLevens, thanks. I see absolute value in using food as medicine for ill health and hope the keto protocol is successful. Only ask because coffee can raise blood sugar and wondered if the coffee was the culprit rather than coconut oil.

Got it. Yes, she tried coffee w/ butter and zero problem. It was definitely the coconut oil. Esp interesting because it is marketed so much as promoting ketosis. Just re-proving how much individual physiology plays a crucial role

Hello,

Clarified butter is easier to digest. The idea is to make the butter slowly melt. Then, with a spoon / colander or any kind of filter, we cut off the white particles on the surface. These particles are the lactosis proteins.

Finally, you get butter without lactosis and you can use it the same way than standard butter, without the "drawbacks" of lactosis.

After reading this article, I am a little skeptical. Everything in that article basically says that IF or similar "diets" are a huge no-no, health-wise. High protein breakfast is a must, skipping meals leads to diabetes, fat gain, and so forth. The author is a nutrition and fitness coach, but there is no mention of his credentials. That makes me a little wary, especially when he talks about diabetics. So, while the author may be held in high regard, I am one that does not think he knows as much about what he is talking about as he thinks he does.

Hello,

Here Fat Loss & High-Protein Breakfast | T Nation an article which says that the bulletproff coffee we are talking about (coffee with coconut oil) is not so goo that it seems...

Frankly, I don't know what to think about it. Maybe it depends of the person : some people have a bigger / smaller insuline sensitivity.

Hello,

@Michael Scott
I usually run a pretty low carb diet. Generally, I use a 16/8 frame f(IF), using paleo eating (excepted I do not go for a lot of carbs such as fruits). It fits me quite well.

Related to bulletproof coffee, I take one from time to time (if I am short of time after my training for instance). However, I do not systematically use it.

Basically, I had a business lunch today. Then, to be sure having to energy loss in the morning, and also because I train in the morning, I took one.

On an everyday basis plus on the long run however, I do not know the influence of such a beverage. I guess some people will be ok with it, and some others won't

Kind regards,

Pet'
