3/4 of the way through his podcast with Joe Rogan. I've read a little about him before, but this is the first extended interview I've listened to. I want to say on one hand he's another crazy guy, genetic freak who can just do crazy things, yet he's speaking about how science is starting to back up his methods. He's willingly subjecting himself to tests to prove that what was thought impossible is not so. Example - he says on the podcast his oxygen saturation was measured during a test at over 100% - aka, he surpassed what was previously thought to be the physiological limit. Anyone read/know his stuff?

It's interesting stuff. I'm not convinced that Wim and the scientist's he's worked with are on the same page about *how* he does these things, but the doing of them has been verified. More than that hes managed to teach groups of other people do do the same feats in the course of a few days while under study.

It's interesting stuff, and he's a charismatic figure. All the more interesting to me because I teach Buteyko breathing, which isn't the same but offers some - but not all - the same benefits. I mention Buteyko breathing here because one of the basic tenets of what we teach is that oxygen in the bloodstream isn't the end all, be all of breathing - having your body be able to _use_ that oxygen is what matters, and most people already have far more oxygen in the bloodstream than they want, need, or can use except for some pretty extreme purposes.

I am convinced that I don't _need_ what Wim Hof offers - I got off a lifetime of asthma and allergy medicines because of my Buteyko breathing. I did and do and will need what I get from my breathing practice, but I confess to being interested if Wim Hof's method might offer benefits I'm not even aware of, and I'd certainly consider learning it.

That's my 2-cents-worth on the subject.

I coldshower daily, and have previously used the wim hoff method. Although I have not used the wim hoff method through summer I expect I'll need to pick it up again to continue cold showering through the winter. It certainly has benefits.

Hello,

Here is an interview of Wim Hof. This a pretty interesting method, especially about breathing techniques and cold management. Currently, I take all my showers with the coldest water I have with the faucet. What I feel is as if air temperature were warmer. It also gives me an surplus of energy.

Kind regards,

Another sweet SFG thread

I have tried Wim's breathing method - usually when I am behind in sleep. I do feel like I get an energy boost about equal to a cup of coffee from it (minus the Starbucks line wait). I also go for cold showers, though not every time (have heard some suggestion that this is not ideal post strength workout).

I find him interesting and positive minded. However, how he performs his deep breathing over extended periods of time, and how this translates into amazing feats is not clear to me. Will also look into buteyko breathing.

Hello,

@Steve Freides
Is Buteyko breathing "only" used to control and reduce asthma attacks ? Or has it others characteristics (reduce stress and so on) ?

Kind regards,

Pet'

Professor Buteyko taught that it will improve over 200 chronic conditions. I can tell you that my wife's high blood pressure has come down in the time she's been practicing Buteyko breathing exercises.

@Steve Freides - looked a bit into the buteyko method, looks like a sound practice from what I saw - seems like there is some crossover with some meditative practices.

I only have about 1 year to draw from, but combined exercise and breathing practice/meditation seems to have a very positive impact for my mood and health.

Buteyko is a meditative practice - basically because there's no other way to get your numbers to improve except to approach it that way.

Ok, so, let say I want to try Wim's breathing metod. Could somebody tell me what to do at first and how to train this kind of breathing?

I've been using the Wim Hoff method for a year or so. I like the breathing method as I feel like I'm actively doing something which I suppose runs contrary to traditional meditation practice. Combined with the cold therapy ito def leaves me feeling very "chilled" pardon the pun

So, this Wim Hof breathing method is meditation?
I can be, depending on how you direct you attention. My understanding is that the authors of the studies on his method theorize that the effects have to do with the bodies response to the blood chemistry changes brought on by the combination of hyperventilation and breath holding. So, if true, no mental/attention directing abilities required. That said in doing the practice it's pretty difficult not to get absorbed in the sensations it brings about in a very meditation like way. In that way I would say it could be an aid to meditation - at least during the breath holds.

I was introduced to meditation by Andy Puddicombe and his Head space app. It is terrific if you haven't tried it. The difference with the Wim Hoff method as mentioned by Travis is the sensations it can produce. I like it. If you work through the breathing exercises after a KB season you will feel very chilled. It gives me clarity so in that respect I would treat it as meditation. He's an interesting guy is Wim

Hello,

What I find in WHM is the cold management. I noticed that I am far less sensitive to cold (especially outdoor with wind).

Kind regards,

Pet'

My Tae Kwon Do master used to meditate while sitting in the snow. As I've mentioned here before, I don't think this ability, while indeed quite remarkable, is unique to the method we're discussing.

Hello,

As a diver and freediver, cold management makes sense for me.

Indeed, cold tends to generate tension and the body tries to maintain its internal temperature, so consumes a lot of oxygen. I noticed an increase of my apnea time since I use WHM. I gained 10 - 15s.

Kind regards,

Pet'
