Kettlebell The Simple or Sinister standard by December 2017, Who is going to do it?

Hello,

Did you consider using the 44kg bell ? It seems an 8kg jump is pretty big and the transition will not be very smooth. I would have the same note between your current 32 and your next 40.

Too big jump could tend to lack of technique and could also burn you out.

Kind regards,

Pet'

When choosing the weights I am following the advice of Pavel Tsatsouline. He recommends big jumps. He didn't rule out 4kg increases for men but he recommends 8kg for men and 4kg for women. I'll include a video clip that Strongfirst shared on Facebook recently and a link for an article Pavel wrote.

Perhaps the 4kg will be good for you in your context. Also, for some exercises a 4kg jump might be best, but for the swings and getups I suspect the big jump will be ok. I might try 4kg for military presses but I suspect it is best to really get comfortable with the one you are using and then make the big leap if you are capable of doing it. Perhaps that kind of jump is too much for some people on some exercises.

I did 24kg for the S&S and stuck with it until it was easy. When I jumped to the 32kg it was a big difference but after a couple of weeks I was used to it.

Best of luck,
Robert

Here is an article Pavel Tsatsouline wrote about jumps in kettlebell sizes. I will plan to stick to 8kg jumps unless they are just too much for a particular exercise.

Thanks! I'm at 24kg for both. I still don't quite own it, but I'm getting close. 32kg is next for me on swings. I think I should stick with 24 on getups for now. It's all about form. Thanks for the video !

Simplify!

I think some of the questions many people have could be cleared up by reading Pavel Tsatsouline's book, Kettlebell Simple and Sinister and by reading the S&S articles on this page. If someone wants to do Simple and Sinister I think reading the book is the first place to start.

I do like that article. All great reasons. My reason for opting for the 8kg jump however (besides wanting to follow the progression outlined in the S&S book), is simply to save space and money. I own a 16kg, 24kg and a 32kg (40kg is on the way now), and I can't imagine having space for twice as many bells.

I agree. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars having more kettlebells shipped to me if I don't really need them. They cost money and take up space.

I've mapped out my path to reaching Simple, should be by June. I am at all swings and getups at 24 now, working on compressing the rest interval to 1:1 - should hit that by mid-February. Then gradually swapping sets at 32 for 24 (by April), then compress the interval all with 32 in April and May. Will post a review of S&S on Amazon at that time. Can't wait!

I will try, but I don't believe it's possible since I just started. I still have a long way to reach 32kg and I think that 2018 might be closer to the truth in my case. But I have promised myself that I will reach Simple someday! :)
Where are you now? Reason I ask - I started with two-arm 16kg swings and only 1 getup per side (at 16kg) in September 2016. I now do all sets of both exercises (one-arm swings) at 24kg. Don't under-estimate yourself - you will gradually grow stronger with this program and will surprise yourself constantly!

That's fast progression! Congratulations! :)

I haven't started one-arm swings yet, still doing 24kg two-armed. Today was actually the first time I added a set of 24kg TGUs to my workout (16, 24, 16, 16, 16).

My starting point was pretty much the same as yours, except I started TGUs with a 12kg kettlebell. I've been very happy with the progression so far.

Everybody starts somewhere. Everybody has different abilities. You are practicing and I think that is what is most important.

I am not competing with anyone but myself. Progress is most important. We can grow strong in more ways than just our physical performance.
Best of luck,
Robert

Hmmmm....this discussion on the merits of 4 versus 8 kilo jumps really has me thinking. I've been using the 28. The 24 feels almost like a balloon now but I have trepidation with the 32 because I can be my own worst enemy. It seems so counter intuitive to believe in 8 kilo jumps considering its around the equavalant of going from bench pressing 135 to 185. That's on the surface though as these exercises are completely different. I've had to go back and re-read S&S more than once to get a point through my kettlebells-like-hard head....

I started adding the 32 for swings just before Xmas, got up to doing 6 sets with it quickly but the excess of Xmas got to me and I felt burnt out. Went back to the 24 for a week and relaxed back into it. It felt like the 32. Today tried the 32 for 4 sets and every swing was crisp and nice. The 24 though felt like a 12. I was blown away how light it felt.

Even though it was swinging right in front of me I had to look at it to make sure it was my 24. WTH moment for sure.

I am so close...I am comfortably swinging my 50lb kettlebell, and this week did all my TGUs with my 35lb bell. I might time myself formally over the weekend just to see how long I am taking now, and that will give me a baseline for where I want to be.

Hello,

@Dan_123
Sometimes, getting back is good because it enables to work other skill. For instance, a lighter weight may be the time to do some shadow swings ;)

Kind regards,

Pet'

@Chris F.

For what it's worth, I used intermediate KBs through 36kg. I wasn't patient enough for the slow pace transitioning when using 8kg jumps. YMMV. I never felt guilty. I have used all of the bells since, there is a use for all of them.
