Big wake up to how hard one hand swings are on your grip.

Big wake up to how hard one hand swings are on your grip.

One option might be hand to hand swings. I am currently working on one handed myself, tried what you are mentioning above with set in stone sets, but switched to hand to hand and found it a totally different feel. Read about this method in a past post on the forums, recommended by an SFG instructor as a possible option.

This is not what some people think of as hand to hand (catching kettlebell in midair at the top of the swing). What I have had luck so far with is doing the first maybe 2 or even three reps in the set of 10 as a two handed swing, just to get the groove/timing right, then at the top of the swing on the next set, take a hand off the bell, bring it back through the full backswing and back at the top, then put the other hand in the bell instead and repeat.

Gradually you will get stronger and be able to do two, three, or more with each hand before switching. I am finding I need to take it rep by rep rather than deciding I will do "x" # on each side today. If I feel my grip is a bit off I may only do one swing and switch the hand or even do a few reps two handed before going back to one handed. Somedays are different than others depending on how tired I am, etc. Over the last several sessions in my earlier sets I have been able to work up to even sets of 3 single handed using this method. I will just keep chipping away at the first sets until I can get a full 10 on a side, then systematically work on the next set. You can see more details in my journal in the "for members only" logs about pg 23-24 at this point.

Keep up the work though! Looking forward to seeing how you progress!

Thanks for the reply. Although I found it taxing I think I'm going to stick with this method for now. I found by the second rep each time my technique was better than the first rep so I'm not sure if one rep on each side will do technique was. My grip wasn't being lost, it just felt a lot more difficult than the 2 arm swing.

I had another go at the beep test in work today. Ended up one shuttle less than the time before and my physion thinks I may be overtraining. I have been physically exhausted the last couple of weeks. The issue is trying to fit the sprint sprint training in as well that they have asked me to do. I'm having another go at the beep test next Wednesday so until then I'm only going to train S&S on days I'm not running just so I don't overdo it.

Hurt my back. Not doing one hand swings again until I get proper instruction.

Had a week or so of resting and doing mobility work. Had a 5 hour flight the day I hurt my back so that didn't help and I'm very paranoid when it comes to injuries so just had an easy week mainly doing stretches and a few PGS.

Had another go at the bleep test yesterday and got the same score again. Felt like I had more in me but I just couldn't get any power out of my hips. I'm putting it down to having an easy week and being to excited to sleep the night before after watching the footy (it's definitely coming home).

Felt good to get back into it today. Had the added bonus of my physio watching my swings. She said my swings technique was more of a Romanian deadlift style and I needed to bend my knees a little bit more. Felt so much better after doing that and I felt like I could drive through a lot harder on the way up.

Tried it timed for the first time today. Didn't go for the 5 minutes on the swings but got them all done in 7. Minute off and then done all the get ups in the 10.

So it seems that since taking my rehab instructors advice on my swing technique I'm getting constant back pain. Wont't be training today due to how bad it is. I may have to put this on hold till I can see someone more specialised in kettlebells about my form. I had no issues when I started a few weeks back so I assume my form was fine then but now I'm paranoid about injuring my back.
