Barbell A Barbell Squat Challenge for 2022 (315lb x As Many Reps As Proper)

Like I said about pause squats, they could be a useful tool if you're teaching/learning positioning and tension in the hole and as Antti said, teaching/learning power out of it. However, one might argue that chains/bands/box squats could teach the same things.
Those are the reasons I was always told to do pause squats. I was told that chains/bands didn't carry over well to raw lifters, but the pause squat was akin to them for raw. Not terribly sure how "true" that was, but its what I was taught. This was probably mid to late 2000s.

Yeah, that's usually how the narrative goes - that bands and chains don't "work" for raw lifters. And Greg Nuckols basically said as much recently on one of Dave Tate's podcasts.

No one would argue against specificity. If you're a raw squatter, then the majority of your training should be raw. If you are an equipped lifter, then you should do a lot of equipped lifting. I would argue that training w. bands and chains, which help teach a quick reversal and speed out of the hole, is more specific to squatting powerfully than pause squats regardless if you are raw or equipped. Most people don't have/use bands and chains in training, so it makes sense that more would be biased towards pause squats. It'd be an interesting study to conduct (pause vs. chains, for example), but like most exercise studies it'd probably be, you know, a lot of 'fuzzy'.

11/5/2022:

Last heavy training session until I max out (fake meet) in 14 days. Then I'll spend ~2 weeks working on my 315lb rep max.

For this last set, consider it like a 1st Attempt at a powerlifting meet. I'm also benching and deadlifting.

- Barbell Squat: 1x314, 1x364, 1x404, 1x444lb

11/19/2022:

Attempted a fake powerlifting meet.

- Squat: 1x314, 1x364, 1x404, 1x444, 1x484, 1x514, 1x550 FAIL.
Squats are my best lift. All my squats felt great. 514lb went up fairly easy! I unracked the 550lb and it felt so heavy (something was off, form...). I also had an external distraction (wifes cell phone flash) that threw me way off. Mentally, I knew I was beat (doubt in my mind), so I gave up and just re-racked it. Frustrating because I know I could do it on a perfect day. I'm leaving disappointed but grateful that I'm still moving forward. 514lb is technically still a PR. In 2019 at my last actual meet, I squatted 490lb. 1 month ago I squatted 584lb with reverse bands (about 50+ lb band tension). That was a more impressive lift than the 514 (that is why I'm disappointed).

Physically I feel terrible. I need 1 week to recover. Then I'm going to spend a couple weeks training for Borris's 315lb squats for reps, challenge. Mentally, I feel great! I feel free! Like a huge burden has been lifted from me. I didnt' want to do this "fake meet", but I didn't want to be a coward and back out of it. For 3 years I have been going "Park Bench" and lifting fairly light. These last 3 months ("Bus Bench") have been difficult.

Sorry, I had high expectations this time. But grateful that the weight on the bar is still moving up. I'm 43. At some age I realize that will start to reverse.
You've got time. I got my last decent standing (no step) dunk at 52 and my squat wasn't even in the same ball park as you. At 66 feats like dunking and heavy squatting are distant memories. That's part of the reason I admire Steve Freides, he's older than I am and is still killing it.

@Denny Phillips
I wish I could do that. Feel like I could fly! That's impressive!

When I was younger I could barely touch the rim. Now I could barely hang on the net, lol.
I'll confess that it was pretty weak, at least it wasn't back iron. I was just under 6'6" at the time, some further "settling" has since taken place. That has stunned me as much as anything. I played college ball at 6'6 1/4" and thought that getting shorter as one aged was something that happened to other people. Heck, at 60 I still had 20/20 vision and now I have bifocals. Everybody "evolves" at different rates and I'm just grateful to be able to train at my level. More time spent on mobilty and a different angle on conditioning than twenty years ago but I'm doing okay. I still hate pull-ups as much as I ever did.
