Hi

I've just spent the past half a year doing the basic barbell movements. I've made good gains in strength and I've put on muscle too but I have put on way too much body fat. I actually taught myself to cook a few months ago and I really started to put on weight. Now I'm at the point where I don't like the way I look at all.

My goal is 500 deadlift, 400 squat, 300 bench, 200 press, but I want to be lean. Now I don't know what to do. To my knowledge, if I start losing weight now then it will slow down my strength gains, correct? I may even end up weaker.

Cooking your food yourself is nothing but about the best thing you can do for yourself. Keep it up.

Losing weight rapidly can stall your strength gains. If you are patient, I wouldn't worry about the excess weight at the moment. Instead, I would concentrate on a healthy diet and a good training plan. Have another look at your well-being in three months, for example.
