Always Be Smashing

No formal training for the weekend, but plenty of snow shoveling. 8 inches or so of heavy, wet snow, lots of ice scraping, 3 different driveways... oof.

Since I'm planning to work on my press in the next training block, tried a cold press test of the 40 on Sunday night (no warmup, just grab the bell and press it) - can't do it. For a guy my size, definitely seems like a weak point - brother @Mirek presses it for breakfast. Seems like a good near-term goal.

Karate practice
 
I sometimes experience an interesting phenomenon where, if my shoulders are particularly tired or sore, I wake up in the middle of the night feeling awful all over, and it takes at least an hour to reset and get back to sleep. I think I must tense my whole body while I sleep or something.

Yesterday's karate session was a burn-out conditioning session - probably threw 600+ strikes. That was enough to set off a sore-shoulders-poor-sleep episode. When the alarm went off in the morning to go run, there was just no way - headed back to bed for more sleep.

Volleyball in the evening. Frustrating session that reminded me that most of the old people I'm playing with are only getting worse, not improving. Gotta work on accepting that, even if I am improving myself, no matter how good a team I was on, I'd still have to go to work next morning.
 
Getting old ain't for the weak, or the faint of heart my friend....

I find that I can still go pretty hard and charge with the young un's... for a day... but I sure can't go day after day like I used to do.

Noticed that I was hyper extending my back on the left handed swings. Focus on hitting the standing plank harder, much better for the back.

Felt sluggish today. And lately, I have been ravenous - eating anything that comes too close. Seems to me to say that the high volume of KB ballistics may be challenging the metabolism - that's a good thing.

I'm finding that with the KB work, my grip is too fatigued to do any one arm bar hangs. So instead, switching to loaded two hand hang. Used 80# today, will try the beast next time. Combined with my weight, that's like a respectable DL practice. Also using gloves to give my palms a break.

Also working in some pinky/ring finger cannonball hangs - although it's really just a "lean", I'm not strong enough to support my full weight with those fingers.
 
Did a little pain tolerance training on Saturday: my first new tattoo in about 13 years.

Lots of walking today, just couldn't keep up the jog. Running has definitely been in a bit of a low point lately, presumably due to the recent change in strength program.

Did bar hangs with the beast. A bit challenging on the lower lat, particularly on the right side.

An hour of 6-man volleyball in the evening.
