Yup. Alternatively you could increase calorie intake for a month or two and try reducing it again after that. You still need to have a deficit but it is easier to get one when you break it up a bit.

Hence why I suggested a diet break if he's been in a deficit a long time.

Good chance he's metabolically adapted to current calories thus no longer actually in a deficit.

Yup, cycle it. Drop under calorie needs for two weeks then go back to maintenance for two weeks. Difficult part if figuring your calories needs. The various formulas will put you in the ball park, but based on current info. a lab is needed for an accurate number.

Interesting book on the subject, Burn, by Pontzer, using doubly labeled water to measure energy expenditure.
