There is no real scientific study that would back the dangers of artificial sweeteners. All of them use super high doses that one could not consume.
Diet sodas are def a better alternative to high sugar drinks however mideration is key and one should not base their entire fluid intake on diet sodas but rather water.
I personally use artificial sweetener everyday for several years now to sweeten my daily yoghurt with berries
