However, I was advised to steer clear of "explosive" or plyometric movements until we figure out what's causing the issues with my lower back.

That's one fallacy lots of doctors and patients fall into. Unless you have peripheral deficits there is no "figuring out" of the cause. The percentage of cases where anatomical cause is found is very low. Many people have disabling back pain without any changes on MRIs and vice versa, findings of horribly looking herniated discs in people without any symptoms are very common. Another piece of evidence for this - surgery for isolated low back pain makes no difference compared to conservative treatment.

It is very counter-intuitive, but chronic back pain is the disease of the brain not that of the spine. You can look up the Neuromatrix Theory of Pain to get a better idea of what mean. In short, best solutions to back pain are re-learning to move. Look up Foundation Training on Youtube, lots of powerlifters swear by that method.
