There is variability between people and thus different populations. Short term, yes, weight loss will occur. Then there is an adjustment. There is also a daily expenditure fluctuation.
He refers to many studies but 2 may be of interest. Midwest trial 1 and followed up with more strenuous activity, midwest trial 2. (Both available)

He makes the point that just because you may well weigh the same after 2 years, exercise is healthy.

"Just don't expect any meaningful weight change in the long term from exercise alone".

Long term/short term, different athletic/sedentary populations will differ.

Some of the studies on limit endurance and energy expenditure is also a fascinating read.

Received today; enthralled. Thanks and never think you’ve figured it all out regardless of your successes.

Fascinating. Most research shows ~5% weight loss can be done with exercise. I think the problem comes when people use exercise as the main way - it becomes wildly unsustainable, especially as the dose needs to get higher and higher to see an effect. So I always tell people you CAN exercise to lose weight, it's not the BEST way
Right, make sense given that exercise is (by definition) increasing energy expenditure. This is not independent of energy intake (food), rather, it is inter-dependent. Exercise makes you hungry. On paper an increase in expenditure and decrease in intake should create a deficit which taps into body fat stores, but the reality is more complicated: different “pools” of substrates (glycogen, triglycerides, fatty acids), up- and down-regulation of enzymes that interact with these substrates, hormones which regulate the production and “productivity” of these enzymes, agonist signaling molecules that react to this disruption in homeostasis to restore the balance, and not to mention the psychology and sociology around it all.

The difference is not just 'exercise and food'...

# Environment (Sun light exposure, physical contact between skin and earth etc)
# Social / spiritual connection
# Stresses in alignment with body's design
# Food sourced is natural and unprocessed (not Western processed)
# Sleep
# No internet / electronic devices
# No shoes
# No furniture
# Lifestyle in alignment with seasonal changes
etc etc.
