I often see tactical pull-ups getting mentioned here but I have to admit I'm not entirely sure what the difference is. Is it hollow-bodied position? Something in hand placement (Can chin-ups be tactical?)? Timing?

Hi strongo,

As far as I understand these are the requirements:

-Pronated grip with thumb hooked over the bar

-Hollow position

-Neck or chest must make contact with bar

-Grip just outside shoulder width, not wide or narrow

It's "tactical" as I understand it because it resembles what you'd have to do to climb into a window, scale a fence, etc. - you don't get to wrap your thumbs around in those situations.

Thumbs over and starting from a dead hang are the requirements - the rest are performance and safety tips.

Steve is correct. There is also a method of pullups where no fingers go over the bar and one uses one's closed fist to pull oneself up. This would be useful if one was carrying a gun or flashlight in one or both hands.
