I have noticed that when i dead hang, one arm is very inernaly rotated so that the pit of my elbow is facing forward (the same way I am facing during the hang), yet the other is facing the side of my head.

Is this drastic internal rotation normal? I can externally rotate the shoulder so it is facing inwards no problem, but it seems to naturally want to internally rotate.

Is this position safe?

If it doesn't hurt, it should be ok.

You might want to know more about why, but you'd have to have a movement screen or some other check for range of motion in shoulders, I'd think.

Hanging from the rings is enlightening. You can rotate back and forth and see what feels best, but most importantly, you can just hang and see where it takes you in terms of internal/external rotation of the shoulder.
