Bodyweight foot distance in ETK pump and GGP pushup

When we do the pump stretch in ETK or the pushup in Great Gama Protocol, why do we separate the feet to the distance we do?

I was recently on work travel, and I could only separate my feet by the width of my travel yoga mat for grip in my hotel room. It felt fine, but it inspired the question above.

I find a certain amount of foot separatioin necessary to transition between up and down dog segments. So, part of the reason probably relates to upper limb, lower limb and torso lengths. My wrists are reasonably flexible, however, if the feet are close I find that wrist extension limits movement into upward dog\cobra portion of the movement. Moving the feet a bit further apart solves that problem.
