Kettlebell "Giant 1.0"

Restarted 2.0 today. Had an enforced break due to illness, so decided to start over as I wasn’t that far in when I stopped.
Out of all the sessions I’ve completed todays was hard, coming back after a break and probably not 100%.
@Kettlebellguy reading your results was motivation to get going today, thanks for keeping us up to date with your progress.

I'd be interested in feedback on my approach to Giant. Colored by being 63 and only having started weights/kb 18 months ago.
I learned last year, starting on S&S, that I need to allow myself ample recovery. I learned the hard way...

I also heard, when toying with Jurassic ROP, that for presses - 60 is the magic number for maximizing strength. (This was in one of Louka's videos. )

So, in application here: I go for 60 lifts per arm per day and I'm stopping there.
It took me 21- 23 minutes for Giant 1.0

I find it takes less time with the higher reps, since you don't "lose time" for cleans...

I'm not in a rush here, and don't feel obligated to doing more.
I could see results in upper body comp in my first 4 weeks - very surprising to me.

I'm switching every 4 weeks of Giant to 2 weeks 2H swings A&A style (5 OTM), because cleans just don't compare to the force of swings.

Interesting. I get structurally fatigued(feeling the bounds of elasticity) after 50 reps with 5RM and 80 reps with 10RM weights. Having some scar tissue in my left shoulder probably makes this more apparent than it would otherwise..

I see that some people are doing 1.0>2.0>1.1>1.2. I think that Geoff recommends doing 1.0>1.1>1.2>2.0. What would be the effect of doing 2.0 earlier? My thought was to practice the high rep sets which would allow for good volume in 2.0.

The first time I ran Giant I used an 8RM and @Geoff Neupert recommended 2.0 after 1.0 to help ease into the higher reps.

I am currently doing the 1.0 to 2.0 to 1.1 to 1.2 structure. I am using 28s which are my 10 RM bells.

Like @John K I chose this structure to get more accustomed to the higher rep sets of 1.1 and 1.2.

I started 1.1 yesterday so I will keep you updated on my progress.

I think the 1.0 -> 2.0 -> 1.1 etc structure makes more sense to me. I went to 2.0 after completing 1.0 and 1.1 and I felt like my progress stalled a bit during 2.0 when done in that order. I felt like a bit of a step backwards or sideways from 1.1. In retrospect I should have either gone on to 1.2 or done another RM test prior to starting 2.0.

In my opinion, fwiw, I think running 2.0 after 1.0 makes a lot of sense.

For what it's worth:
I came to Giant by way of Jurassic ROP, which is all ladders. I strained a tendon with too many cleans, and came to Giant for rehab. (And I love it here...)

So the programs are great - just watch to make sure you don't have any weaknesses that may become exacerbated by the different types of C&P

I know that the program is for a pair of KB, but it can also be done with one. It's just that the preferences are for a pair of KB. If it is done with one KB, how do you change the hands - immediately one after the other or maybe with a pause between repetitions. Or is it a matter of preference.

I don't know that a pair are necessarily preferred, universally anyway. The protocols are just different. Cleans are easier with a single bell, but you have to do roughly double the reps and you're, overall, under tension for roughly double the amount of time to get similar pressing work, so in theory, you get half the rest, so your heart rate stays up longer, but maybe not as far up....because the cleans are easier (I think any continuation of this will just be a circle).....

AND....., you only have to buy a single KB!

If I use one KB it might be heavier. For example, I can clean and press with a KB 20 one-handed for 10 reps, but I won't be able to do that with a pair of KB20.

Exactly. There are lots of variables. If your double-clean is the limiter, then using singles allows you to work your presses more. When I was going through the various Giants with various weights (and with varying degrees of push pressing, to be honest), the limiter jumped around between the presses, clean power, grip strength, cardiovascular capacity, chalk efficacy..... Toying with singles adds even MORE variables. And it's cheaper!

...... And it's cheaper!
I train in a gym that has pairs from 4 to 36 kg. The idea is that with pairs there is more general fatigue and not so much muscle fatigue. At least that's what I think. And with the heavier KB, I will provide more muscle tension.
For two months one shoulder has been hurting and I have been doing more pulling and isolation exercises for my upper body. I'm better today. I'll hit the gym in about an hour and see how I'm doing. But for such programs with a large involvement of the shoulders, everything should be fine. It almost doesn't hurt when snatch.

It might be heavier in one hand, but the systemic load with two is much heavier. Even going lighter with two bells than heavier with one has had much larger carry over to hypertrophy and barbell in my life.

Have you actually run Giant yet? Sounds like you are giving advice on speculation and I’ve seen a lot of posts about altering it from you, but none where you have actually done the program.

I didn't do it. I started ROP several times, but kept injuring myself. There was no chance left for the Giant to try.
I promise not to post any more on the topic, I'm obviously spamming without meaning to.
