If you had only one way of gauging how strong someone is, what would it be?

I was thinking either grip or lower back. I know many old time Soviet coaches would measure sprinter and Olympic lifter's potentials via the hypertophy of their lower back. If you have a trench running down your spine, your posterior chain for sure is strong.

IMO, touch and go bench press at an arbitrary weight is the best measure of strength, and yes I did consult on the design of the NBA and NFL combines. ;)
