Insulinogenic Whey Protein

This is interesting.

Research shows that Whey Protein produces an Insulin Response but does not increase Blood Sugar. Other protein do the same to a lesser degree.

Insulin: The "Global" Anabolic Hormone

Insulin is defined as a "Global" Anabolic Hormone.

It promotes gains in muscle mass and fat mass.

The key is learning how and when to trigger Insulin for increasing muscle mass while minimizing fat gain.

The Ketogenic Diet

A common complain about The Ketogenic Diet is it does not produce an increase in glucose (due to low carbohydrate intake), which triggers and increase in Insulin, which produce a muscle building anabolic effect

As one article noted, consuming Whey Protein after a workout alone or with a Ketogenic Meal dramatically increases Insulin; ironically with no increase in Blood Sugar.

One study found that consuming whey protein versus white wheat bread led to 87% and 139% higher insulin levels 15 minutes and 30 minutes post consumption, respectively. [7]

Type II Diabetics

As many know, the issus is High Blood Sugar. The body is unable to produce enough Insulin to shuttle glucose out of the blood and into the muscles.

Reserch with Type II Diabetics have demonstraed when they consume a Whey Protein Drink prior to their (one study) or after the meal (another study). Whey Protein's increase in Insulin (with NO increase in Blood Sugar) enable the Type II Diabetics to shuttle Blood Sugar into the muscles.

Base on that information, it appears consuming a Whey Protein with a meal most likely elicits approximately the same effect.

Type 2 diabetes: Could whey protein before meals help blood sugar?
Whey protein drink may help manage blood sugar in type 2 diabetes

A new study reveals that when people with type 2 diabetes consumed a small drink — a 100 ml shot — containing 15 grams of whey protein 10 minutes before their meals, they had reduced post-meal glucose excursions away from balance, as well as more balanced and healthy daily blood sugar levels.

The shot of whey protein also reduced participants’ daily blood sugar levels without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia.

In addition, participants experienced two additional hours per day within euglycemia, a state of balance in which blood glucose remains at healthy levels.
