Goal: I am 59, turning 60 on August 30, 2020. To the extent it is in my control, I want to be healthy and active in my 60s and beyond. At the drops of the hat, I want to be able to Yosemite’s half dome and back in a day (16 miles, round trip). My wife and I own a horse stable where we board ten horses for other people. I want to be able to throw hay bales around with the “young” people. I also enjoy gardening and carpentry.

About me: I am a male, 6 ft 2 in in height, and weighs 220 pounds. I need to lose some more weight and would like to be around 200 pounds. I have, more or less (sometimes less than more), got nutrition under control: dead animals and vegetables. I have lost 40 pounds over the last year using that diet. I gain weight if I stray from that diet.

I use to run (never enjoyed it). I use to cycle quite a bit and would lot do it more now if I had time. It is not a priority right now. During the last ten years, I have sporadically followed some strength programs, including bodyweight, barbells, and kettlebells. I travel enough where I get out of routines easily.

I did S&S for a while when the first version of the book came out. I never did it regularly enough, although I got to the point of doing swings and getups with a 24K kettlebell. Overall, I was pushing too hard and trying to up weights too fast, and felt drained after many sessions. I was always trying to compress the time of sessions. I seldom got more than four sessions in a week.

The 2020 Resolution: I picked up the new version of S&S. After reading it, I realized I had done several things wrong in my fist S&S attempt. I resolved to follow S&S exactly as in version two. I use the talk test and “practice’ five times a week. I will not progress faster than in the book and may go slower.

For the first part of 2020, I worked at getting ready to do S&S, which mainly consisted of doing swings and getups. On April 13, I began S&S using a 24K kettlebell for swings and 16K for getups. The 16K for swings seemed too light. I choose to start with a three day on, one day off schedule. From April 13 to July 10, I did 67 sessions. On July 10, the session was

One handed swings: 24k-32K-32K-32k-24K , 10 sets of 10
Getup: 16k-24k-24K-24K-16K 10 sets of 1

If I continue at this pace, I should have timeless simple by the end of the year. Here is what I think after doing 67 sessions:

  • The three day on/one day off was hard at the beginning. By the third session, I was dragging. However, I kept doing it and my body has adjusted. Now I am stringing together longer number of days, with the longest being seven. I think it very important to do the sessions often. My body adjusted.
  • I am 59 years old and do get “sore” from some sessions of S&S. Of course, I can get sore sitting in a chair or sleeping in bed. I judge the need for rest by taking a walk. If I feel “better” after a walk, I do the session.
  • I find swing with the 32K challenging. However, the 24K is very easy. Maybe that is physiological. During a session, I am happy when I move from the 32K to 24K for my final two sets of swings.
  • I don’t find getups with the 24K to be too challenging.
  • I am going to progress “slow” with progressions, in particular, on the swings.
  • I have no amazing body transformation to tell. I notice changes in my body, but I doubt that anyone else would notice. Getting up and down from the ground is easier. Carrying things (e.g., hay bales is easier. I am stronger. These are the benefit I wanted.

Did this session in the morning, it felt good, very strong.

Note:
1. I did 5 sessions from the week of Jan 12 to Jan 18. Will be gone Saturday. Monday I skipped because of other heavy work (moving a lot of hay bales)
2. Went up in progression on getup. Now doing 4 sets of 24K. That felt ok.
3. I was very sore Saturday morning (July 18). S&S may have something to do with it More likely a 5 hour drive on Saturday. Sitting in a car is problematic for me.

Wishing you an early Happy 60th Bday next month. Welcome to the 60's, stay active. Have to ask a stupid question, is doing Yosemite's Half dome on foot or horseback? I was at Yosemite in '57 and still remember it pretty well, beautiful place. We drove across country to see my newly born 1st nephew, and slept "under the stars" at most rest stops and picnic areas. Probably illegal now, and not very safe.

I think it is only on foot. The last part they put cables up to get to the top. You need a permit to go to the top. I did this hike 20 years ago.

July 18 and 19 - off, due to a trip to help my daughter move out of an apartment. I helped move stuff out of a third floor apartment.

Very hot in central Illinois

Notes:
1. i am very sore right above the knees and it hinders the move to the standing position on the getup. This happened after a long drive on Friday and Sunday last week (6 hours in a car). Either that or I added one set of 24K getups. This was a step progression from 2-16K/3-24K to 1-16k/4-24K. The later does not seem like it would cause soreness.
2. I took off Friday because of being very tired. It was hot this week in central Illinois (90s). I do sessions in a garage and it is hot in there. I find that draining.
3. 5 sessions this week. I wanted to do 6. Next week is 6!

I usually only do full get ups once a week, maybe twice. Other than that all my get ups are the bottom half. My knees are garbage so I reduce the weight for full get ups. Bottom 1/2 still gives me plenty of work.

So I have been having problems with sore knees and it’s the getup that is doing it. August 3rd was a two handed swing day and I did the getups only to the bottom half position based on ShawnM suggstiong above (Thanks). I also modified the getup based on the suggestion here that had the knee not pivot under weight. That suggest to me that maybe the surface I was doing it on may contribute to knee soreness. I am doing S&S on a 1/4 rubber surface on top of a cement floor. (See below)

6A04ACAD-3187-4509-A843-20910FF6B756.jpeg
Today (August 4) I did getups on grass and did full getups. Knees feel really good.

I think I got ways to deal with knee soreness between 1) not doing full getup on all days, 2) modifying the getup to keep the knee stationary under load, and 3) doing them on grass. Also, may look for a more cushiony mat for the garage.

In other positive news, the 32K swings are getting more “controlled”. They at not easy, but I feel the form getting better and more powerful.

Total time = 71 min

Notes:
1. I had some travel and missed some sessions, but those I did went pretty well. One good thing about COVID is I have less travel and making the S&S sessions is easier. That is the only good thing about this pandemic.
2. On getups, I have transitioned totally to 24K. I have been having knee issues a while back but they have, to a large extent, gone away. I have been doing the getups outside in the grass and that helps a lot. I also do some only kneeling sessions.
3. This coming week I will be transitioning to doing all swings with the 32K. The 32K is challenging, and I have been focusing on making the standing plank at the top. I have been reasonably satisfied with progress. I am feeling more confident with the 32K. I think doing getups with the 32K will be challenging, but that is a month away.
4. Its warm here. I find the sessions zap me more in the heat. I took 71 minutes today. It was hot and I had no place to go.

So I have been having problems with sore knees and it’s the getup that is doing it. […] I also modified the getup based on the suggestion here that had the knee not pivot under weight.

People often think of having the rear leg work to align with the front leg to be in the proper position for the lunge. But the front leg can also work to align with the rear leg. Or both legs can also work to align with one another. The fact that you recognize there is more than one way to align the legs will serve you well.

Notes:
1. I made 100 sessions of S&S! I have progressed. Started out S&S at 24K swings (after doing swings for about 6 months before starting) and 16K getup. If anything, I increased too fast since beginning this in March.
2. My sessions take about 50 minutes. I am not trying to speed it up but I don’t want them to get longer.
3. I have now reached 32K for all swings. I do not “own” a 32 swing, but I feel in control. I am going to look around for a 40K Kettlebell but will stay at 32K for at least 2 months and then re-evaluate. I reached the timeless simple standard on the swing, and feel like just doing it for a while would be good.
4. Getups are all at 24K. I will begin the process of working in the 32K in about two weeks, and may have the transition from the 24K to 32K done by January if I follow the progression in S&S. If anything, I may go slower.

Notes:

I life got in the way time period. I got very busy at work and did some traveling. I forgot to through a kettle bell in the car. The good thing is that the September 22 session went fine. I will see how it goes tomorrow.

I added a ruck with 16K of 1 1/2 mile on Thursday evening (Sept 24), because I was feeling great. It went good. I was “tired” on Friday after doing three days of S&S in a row, after taking some time off due to travel last week. Don’t know if the ruck did it or the time off, but the GOAL IS THE GOAL: Get to Simple. If all goes well, I should be at timeless simple in January. Don’t screw it up by adding things.
