Off-Topic Is a 286lb deadlift impressive for someone new to lifting?

My friend is new to lifting and we done a deadlift today and he managed to lift 286lbs. He only weighs 148lbs.
 
Yes, I'd say it's impressive, but not outrageously so.

In today's world if you picked random age 18-28 males with bodyweight 140-180 who had never lifted, I would estimate you might get 10% of them that could deadlift that on their first session. (Whether it's advisable to do so is another question).

But in the world of 50 or 100 years ago, where people used their strength for everyday living... I would bet that 80% or 90% of them could.

So I would say it's likely either that 1) he lifts things in everyday life and has naturally learned to use his strength and the hip hinge pattern, as most people tended to do many years ago, or 2) he's a natural lifter with a lot of fast-twitch muscle fiber. Some people are just like that.
