Hi,

I have one very simple question and I think you guys will be able to help.

I have never thought about or had time to goto the gym or even think about my body but I have recently had a change in career from sitting on my backside driving for 9 hrs per day to landscaping and it is hard (very enjoyable) work and I am discovering muscles I never knew I had. As I am basically working out 9 hrs per day lifting and digging etc is this a good time to use protein powder or something similar to help me bulk out my skinny weedy body?

Any help would be great oh and I am dairy intolerant so is there anything out there I can use?

Thanks

Wayne

if you're looking for protein they make alternatives for dairy based protein like pea or hemp proteins. Whether you need it or not really depends on how many grams of protein you are already eating throughout the day.

your problem is the same with mine. I need to increase my weight but I cannot drink milk.

If lactose intolerance is the issue, then whey protein isolate or another low carb dairy protein shouldn't be an issue because lactose is a carb (sugar). Otherwise there are many alternatives to dairy proteins on the supplement market. Just check that the leucine content is adequate (around 3g or more per serve)

Well, there are definitely a good variety of different protein powders out there for lactose-intolerant people. They are usually either plant (rice, beans etc) or some "meat" based (beef protein powerd, egg ones and etc...) Just google a little about them, and you will find a s*** ton of different products.

But do you really need protein powder per see? I mean, protein power ain't no miracle or magic powder that will start putting mass on you... it's a supplement to help you increase your protein intake WHEN you can't get enough of it out of food. So I would recommend first starting a real diet that is aimed at bulking or gaining muscle mass. For that- calculate your daily caloric need and your macros ( how many carbs, fats, and protein you need daily) then build a simple dieting plan around that. It's actually quite simple and a, if you are new to it a few minutes of googling, will help you a lot (no need for fancy-schmancy "personal" dieting plans from "specialist")...

Okei I might have gotten a bit off track here... but to sum it up- Get your diet under check! And then ... if you really need it- start looking for protein powders.

I’m gonna just say Optimum nutrition good standard whey. I am lactose intolerant and if I have 2 shakes a day w 50g each I pay for it but one is usually fine. I started using it out of convenience and being cheap. Was eating 150g of protein a day in beef but the ON whey is 50 bucks for a 5lb jug so it’s not too expensive compared to steak.
It does still mess w my stomach a little but... ya know. Ya choose your battles. I can tell you for sure when I was using isolated pea protein it also messed with my stomach. All this crap is just too processed.

IMO you shouldn't need protein powder unless:
a: you're vegetarian or vegan
b: you're actually doing considerable strength training or body building
c: you're both of the above

Try to get your protein from meats and fish if you're not vegetarian or vegan.

To add weight you need calories, not just protein. If you're not gaining, you need to first get a baseline of both how many calories you're burning and eating, and then add ~500/day to what you're eating. This is the same general adivce you'll get online elswhere.

I may consume one protein shake/day. I love fruit and find myself eating lots of bananas throughout the day while at work. I'll have a shake to supplement that. I eat "normal" when I get home.

If I make a pot of coffee and have some left, I let it cool and dump it in my shaker cup. Pop it in the fridge overnight and I'll add a scoop or two of chocolate protein powder in the morning for a quick breakfast.

Works for me.

Same with me, sir.

I highly suggest the Vega Vegan Premium Protein. I have a shake every day and it's really been helping. Whey always messes with my stomach and that brand really tastes good.

Most vegan proteins taste like melted Play-Doe ?

You can try Extend Pro Isolate, a choco lava flavored protein.

If any whey doesn't work for you, eat real protein meat. Just don't forget to get enough rest, eat a well balance nutrition foods plus a good source of supplements to help you unlock your potential. Good luck man!

This is much less true than it used to be.

You speak the truth. Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard Plant protein is perfectly palatable in the chocolate flavour at least; I haven't tried the others.

I used to use unflavoured Soya Protein isolate (the cheapest protein I could get from my local health food shop) in a blender with water, some oats, a banana, some dates, cocoa powder and peanut butter: Tasted kind of like a Snickers.

My boys, neither of whom are vegetarians, actually prefer a vegan protein powder - it's one that's only sold at Whole Foods.

I used the last of my EAS protein powder, I work for the company that owned EAS. For the record, I was very disappointed that our nutrition division shut it down....

My daughter's boyfriend pointed me towards Dymatize protein powder. The label states: 100% Whey Protein Isolate Powder, 25g of protein, 2 carbs, Total Fat 05.g, and 120 calories per scoop, 55 scoops in the container, Gluten-free with less than 0.5 g of lactose, for $39.88 at Sam's Club.
