Now I'm curious - is there a standard way to load these things?

You (or at least I do) want weight up high, close to you and distributed evenly

I walk with a backpack full of groceries - not much, but often 20 lbs. I use a hip strap and prefer the weight as low as possible. I much prefer carrying on my hips to carrying on my back, if that makes any sense.

Well... it sort of depends on how the pack is constructed, and a bit on terrain. Weight close to the body is usually preferable.
By constructed, I mean how much padding there is, any frame (internal or external) and what type of suspension system is used. Here is a pretty standard and common illustration...
