Other/Mixed Stretch behind the knee

I can do a left front split but whenever I try to do it with square hips but whenever I do, I feel a stretch behind the knee(between the hamstring and the calf) just in this part. Some other things involving hamstring stretches always make me feel a stretch in this area and I'm not sure whether that's normal or not. Does it have any side effects at all or downsides for stretching that part? Is stretching it safe? Is stretching tendons or ligaments a bad thing? Does it have any downsides or side effects?
 
The recommended procedure is to get as far into a stretch as you can while still being able to generate muscle tension. Do that, then relax and allow yourself to go a little, and only a little further, and repeat - tension, relax, go a little further - for a few cycles.
