Kettlebell Sweat, dry fasting, and weight loss

I have done three 69~72 hour fasts. In hindsight, doing so without water would have been dangerous and I cannot see any extra benefit.

My only “tactical dehydration” was strapped for 9 hours in the backseat of an F-4 Phantom from Mississippi to Spain. From bedtime to briefing to takeoff, shut down was 24+ hours. I didn’t want to fumble through three layers of clothing to find my minuscule member and fill a rubber “piddle pack,” whilst perched atop an armed ejection seat so I purposefully drank nothing. I was a child of 27. Started my rehydration with an ice cold can of Budweiser after sliding off the wing. That can of Budweiser remains the very best beer I have ever had in my life.
One friggin Mic Drop after another. It's endless.

When it comes to fat loss, is there really?
There's a lot of speculation. But, maybe this is in circles which are more fascinated by fasting than fat loss. It's not necessarily the best informed line of inquiry, to restrict water.

I myself during extended fasts noticed a good benefit from water and mineral supplementation.

"Speculation" is a kind word for ideas that lack plausible mechanistic explanations and run counter to current scientific evidence.

"Snake oil", "quackery", or "voodoo" would be less kind words.

I’ll say this about fasting. The best I ever did at Kenneth Jays 15:15 snatch protocol was 72 sets of 8 snatches with a 16kg on the warrior diet. I could’ve done 80 but I dogged it. The only time I ever bent 6 inch nails was on that diet too. I’ve also noticed that the body just conjures energy from somewhere when you fast. Fasting has always been part of the human experience and it’s funny to me in these times of plenty that it has to be pushed for fat loss and health benefits. I enjoyed 16:8 though I would get deeply hangry around 1150 and my work colleagues would let me eat before talking to me, which I found absurd as I’m deeply genial and amiable and I also sell bridges. Lol I think I’ll go back to fasting entirely one day a week and just drinking the old wasser when I don’t have to engage with the general public.

That "from somewhere" is first from glycogen (which is bound to H2O), and when that's gone, your fat reserves.

And it’s utter rocket fuel. As a paleo enthusiast and on occasions a keto type I never ever experienced the whole “fat is abundant energy” thing. I just felt like utter dog turd and did ammonia leaks. Fasting though definitely delivered.

Fat is actually the opposite of rocket fuel compared to glycogen.

The fat burning energy process is not as quick, has more steps.

You wouldn't want to do a lot of explosive stuff (sprints, barbell snatches) and only rely on fat as fuel -- performance suffers pretty badly.

But it has a giant reserve and you can go for a long time for things that are moderate intensity.

Part of the fasting high may also be cortisol.

You are on to something with the cortisol. It’s one of those weird ones. I’ve had terrible sessions with proper sleep and hydration and amazing sessions on a bout of insomnia and coffee to wake me up from said insomnia. I’ve also had amazing sessions hungover. My fastest ever 500 swings doing Dan Johns 10,000 swing workout was 20 minutes after a crate of Guinness the night before. I was still plastered as I did the swings but by the beard of Zeus I was horsing them out. I even had a moment where I was like “Guinness is my red Kryptonite man!!!” Lol

It makes biological sense -- your body increases stress to get you off your butt and out of your cave, energized to get out and eat something

Totally. My sense of smell doesn’t really work either unless I fast. I mean I can smell things but when I fast there’s a definite nuance to it. I’ve also noticed the world is brighter fasted.

Yes there's quite a quirk to it.
I remember it being a freeing experience to have allowed the sensation of hunger to pass.
That "from somewhere" is first from glycogen (which is bound to H2O), and when that's gone, your fat reserves.
I do recall the euphoria after very plentiful fat reserves went into full tilt energy production when I first tried an extended fast >24hrs.

To add to this. Anytime someone takes great pains to explain plausible mechanistic explanations and doesn't follow it up with studies backing up the validity requires you to put on your critical thinking cap.

Sometimes it is because the studies haven't been done. The vast majority of the time they have been and the people promoting the ideas didn't like the outcomes. If they criticize studies that disprove the hypothesis based on their funding source, and not the design and methods, usually a big glowing red flag.

Always be wary of a conclusion looking for supporting data.

Do you know why there is a family history of type 2 diabetes?
It's usually labelled as lifestyle dominant but it isn't always an outcome of excess energy and inactivity.
If there is genetic/family history underlying a biological cause ie liver disease? Or is it cultural and environmental ie over eating and sedentary behaviour? Or a mixture of the 2? Or a blended type 1 and type 2?
I'd discuss this with a diabetic specialist.
.....and before embarking on any extreme diet.

Just eat less than you do now. Cut out the crap.

As said by @NorthCoastMiller , exercise is a potent intervention for health. A simple way is to go for a walk after you've eaten and do whatever other more formal exercise you choose and like. And walk more generally....move more, be more active. A low stress ticket. Gentle.

Get a base established. Good eating habits be more active.....why go for some sudden optimisation or extreme?

Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good.

A 3 meal a day thing of good food....we all know what that is....and for fat loss, lean protein, fruit and veg. As diverse as possible. Limit starch and fat.

Probably not perfect, nothing is, but very sustainable. Add some energy when and if you need it in the form of starch and/or fat.

Good luck.

Watchnerd's Rule arises again!

P.S. I don't think you can count as fasted if you had a crate of Guinness.

It's about 200 calories per pint.

Couldn't let this gem slip by. Absolutely spot on!!

YES; follow the $$.

I cannot remember the Marine General's name who said: "the answer to your question is money. Now what is your question?"
