hi I am self taught using Kettlebells and have just bought ETK and S&S. I have one question about the downswing (sorry if this seems obvious): is the bell controlled down by the arms using gravity or powered down using the arms?

Both are options.
If you accelerate the KB down with the lats we call that an overspeed eccentric.
And you can enjoy the float and let gravity do it's thing reconnecting the arms to the ribs.
In either option we keep the kb high in the triangle/upper groin.
