If you want to squat heavy to full depth, its good to know how to maintain your back with bodyweight, although there's going to be a limit due to center of gravity. Holding your arms out in front of you helps to stay upright.
It's definitely not a necessity or pre-req, since squatting deep with goblet squats for example will get you there more easily. But there are lessons in bracing and feed-forward (as in, actively getting your body to properly engage bracing musculature, rather than responding to a load) that bodyweight squatting forces you to learn.
