Other/Mixed UST (Unstable Surface Training) Good or Bad?

It can be either or neither, depending on your goal, and depending on what you do on the balance device.

One of our best "balance" exercises - and it's really not about balance but about strength and being able to balance your strength - is the one-legged kettlebell deadlift. It's a better example of StrongFirst's approach than trying to do something on a soft surface - being able to deadlift while standing on one leg, eventually with a heavy weight, and _always_ with good deadlift form, is an excellent exercise for anyone, and also excellent assistance for many other lifts, e.g., the regular deadlift.
