Three squares a day of healthy food is what keep our recent ancestors trim and healthy (just look at almost any photograph of a crowd or group of people until about 1950 to see how trim they almost all are, even in middle age).
Problem is we now snack ourselves into a 4th or 5th meal, and eat mostly processed food. So I think the food quality trumps meal timing ultimately.
