I heard mention of this exercise somewhere - is it simply performed with hands clasped together as opposed to holding a kettlebell?

In the app it is done with a kettlebell, but I like the idea of not using a weight first thing in the morning!
Exactly. I add it to the 33 stand up mobility drills in Jon Engum's Flexible Steel book, or any other hybrid warm up I do. In Feb 2018 I showed up to the SFG II cert with back spasms. One of the Assistant Instructors used it as part of a group warm up prior to instruction. I had a WTH effect when back tightness and pain started to drop during the halo. It has been in my regimen ever since.

It's in the bodyweight online course mobility drills. It's a nice substitute if you only have a heavy bell on hand but want to do the S&S warm-up. Or like Don said, a good move to add to the flexible steel joint mobility routine.
