Old Forum work to rest ratio for ballistics

Pavel mentions in S&S an ideal work to rest ratio of 1:1. Then there are a lot of people using a Tabata like scheme (20 sec reps, 10 sec rest repeated for 4 minutes). I would like to know more about the advantages or disadvantages of this ratios. Which one is better for which purpose?

According to crossfit different intervals train different energy pathways.

Whatever that means.
