Breath hold time

What does your breath hold time say about your willpower?

A breath hold is made up of two phases. The first is the control phase (C), which lasts until your start experiencing the first difficulties. The duration of this phase reflects your organism’s sensitivity to decreased levels of oxygen and an increased concentration of carbon dioxide (hypoxia and hypercapnia, respectively).

The second is the willpower phase (W), which starts after the control phase ends and lasts until you resume breathing.

Russian scientists developed the willpower index (WI), which is determined with the following formula:

WI = (W : C) x 100

For example, Boris’ Hench test result is 40sec, made up of a 25sec control pause plus a 15sec willpower phase. We calculate his willpower index: (15 : 25) x 100 = 0.6. That makes Boris, to put it mildly, a big sissy.

Natasha has the same Hench test results, 40sec, with a different ratio between the control and the willpower phases: 19sec and 21sec, respectively. Thus, her willpower index is (21: 19) x 100 = 1.1. If you are putting together a team, Natasha is the obvious choice. Not surprisingly, more accomplished athletes have higher willpower indices. In one study of athletes of both genders, beginners’ willpower index averaged 75.3, intermediates’ 94.5, and advanced athletes’ 127.
