Does anyone here sleep on the floor or on some sort of minimalist mattress ?

Any good books websites youtube etc worth looking at ?

Initial google searches reveal that lots of people sleep on floor and get used to it and say there are some benefits over a mattress.

Grew up sleeping on a futon, and did so till I got married.

I found there can be some experimentation with how much padding or cushion one needs. Sleeping right on the mat or allot was something I could do when I was much younger, and I wouldn't notice a difference in sleep quality. As I got older sleeping in the dirt was something that got more and more noticable during field exercises.

You can try out various combinations of futon. Parts and find something that's comfortable. But zeroing it out to sleep on the floor seems easiest for the smallest framed types among us.

As I got older I settled on a standard foam plus cotton futon.

I slept on the floor for 4 years. Even a hardwood floor with no mattress or cushion of any kind. The first floor I slept on was a carpeted bedroom floor with just a blanket underneath. Took me three days to get used to it and after that sleeping on the floor was always and still remains the most comfortable place for me to sleep. It's worth a few days of getting used to it. Now I can sleep anywhere.

Did your sleep improve after this new habit ?

First, I'd say that a futon can mean many things. I suppose we can't resist going into semantics, but...

I sleep on a hard mattress. Sold as a futon. I like it.

I've slept on hardwood floors for nights occasionally. Never had a problem, feels great. Could well stick to it. Alas, I am married.

Comfortable but reasonably firm and expensive mattress. I think much of the stuff about sleeping on hard surfaces is not evidence based but just slight escoteric mysticism.

Hi, I sleep on mattress topper placed on the floor. It is about 5cm high. Not too soft, not too hard.

Blimey !! We have two people who have slept comfortably on bare wooden floors - I will have a go after getting used to thin mattress on floor - might take a while. Last night on the yoga mat wasn't too comfortable.

- One Sceptic - and a few who have slept on thin mattresses on the floor - that's my next step

- I've seen various claims that at the moment seem quite extraordinary regarding hard floor/minimal mattress on internet i.e. "Cured my bad back" "Cured my sleep Apnea" "As good as an 8 hour massage" etc.....

Thankyou all, for the responses, its somewhat reassuring to get opinions from known forum folk, rather than people I am not familiar with on the internet.

I have slept on wooden floor, and when I stay with my mother in law in Japan, sleep on tatami.

At home we have a stainless steel platform bed, no box spring, and a very very hard mattress.

I slept on a futon initially in college.

One year, I came very close to separating my shoulder during a touch football game. Had to keep my arm in a sling for around 2 months. During that time, I found I could not sleep on any sort of mattress. Sleeping on anything other than the floor made my injured shoulder ache terribly. I got used to it, and kept sleeping on the floor for about a year after my shoulder had healed.

Then, I met my girlfriend (future wife). Oddly enough, she had no interest in getting used to sleeping on the floor. So, back to a mattress.

Now, I sleep on a mattress filled with the down plucked from newly-hatched white swans from the highest mountains of northern Canada. It is glorious.

Is this count as minimalist mattress?
