I seem to recall that Taleb touched the subject of the "asymmetry" in production in The black swan. Seems very human. Things happend in leaps not linnear progression even though one puts in the consistent effort.
 
When it rains it pours. And this is some good rain. I always appreciate your even handed approach to training. "It Depends" might not be as sexy as "constantly varied exercise" or "no squats," but it's much more often than not right. It's not the tools that matter, it's the process.
