I typically see ladders when some one is talking about either KB or BW. But could ladders be used with say barbell military press or Bench Press? If so is it not as affective as say a 3X5 or 5X5 program?
It ought to work fine, it is discussed in Easy Strength. I reckon the reason you don't see them done as much is because the point of ladders is to get volume in and this is more essential to progress when working with large jumps in weight as in kettlebells/BW progression.
