Reading from p40 in S&S.  Hand position in the get up, post to hand.  Reasoning for turning hand:  to externally rotate shoulder and avoid jamming wrist; to put shoulder in a stronger position.

The question I have is regarding a push up.  Would you turn your hands out in a push up for the same reason.

I guess this is what the "perfect pushup" device attempted to achieve?

Is this variation [in the push up] inconsequential or does it affect the elbow/shoulder to any great degree?

Thank you,

Gwen

in the pushup (though there are many variations) you would "screw" your hands into the ground and keep the elbows tight to the body to keep the shoulders packed.  really press the fingers and hands hard and deep - just like you screw your feet into the ground in the squat  - but screwing into the ground is different than turning the hands out.  I keep the hands pointed straight ahead and press and screw to the outside, though the position of my hands does not change during the press.
