Hi guys

Long time lurker and have finally created an account.

I purchased some 1lb and 2lb indian clubs for shoulder warmups for my S&S work. Does anyone else use these? How do you incorporate them? I (probably like most others) have had a few shoulder issues over the years and have heard these things are great.

Thanks

@SMason22, welcome to the StrongFirst forum.

Your idea of using them to warm up sounds good. I recommend an in-person workshop to learn how to best use them.

Welcome @SMason22. I’ve got a 2lb and 4lb set I made out of pvc pipe and sand last year. They work well for my shoulders but the biggest problem I had was finding good instruction. I wound up pouring over tons of YouTube videos until I managed to find a few decent ones and was able to work up my own routine. Later I discovered that Grey Cook and Brett Jones have a dvd course you can buy over at the FMS site but I have no experience with it. Both those guys are tops in their fields so I would imagine it’s very good. I still use my clubs but as far as warmups before S&S I find that 35lb halos loosen my shoulders up just fine but depending on what your shoulder issues are the clubs might be better suited.

Hi @SMason22, yes they can be good for the shoulders.

Use the forum's search feature and you will find some good past discussions. Put "Indian Clubs" in the search bar and check "Search titles only".

Workshops would be great, but they are few and far between. This is a great DVD resource: Product: Club Swinging Essentials

Yes, in between my military press sets I swng those clubs. I got a few out from Dr. Ed Thomas DVD.

that is exactly how I use them between my A+A work, and as a light warm up. They are a great complement to hardstyle. On a usual A+A session with 20 repeats I have about 20min of club practice. They lubricate the shoulders, make loose, open up the chest, promote posture, rhythm, coordination, relaxation...

Thanks Harold. I'm guessing you don't have a set routine and just practice all the various movements? What weight do you use?

I have no set routine. Between one repeat I use only one club, on the next one with my other hand, then I use both, sometimes really slow, then some faster..one can use quite some variations with these, just plain simple circles are very good. The weight I use must be around two pounds each.

Great selection of videos, there, Harald. Thanks!

You guys are inspiring me to get the clubs out again.

I've started with clubs this month. I only do a couple movements with them, but my shoulders feel alot better. Between halos, clubs, and arm bars, my shoulders have never felt this good!
I have 4 clubs I use. They are sledge handles from hammers we broke at work!

The FMS sight (functionalmovement.com) has a great Indian Swinging club online course that is very affordable and very helpful. I would highly recommend it!

I bought a cheap pair of Victorian-era Indian clubs off ebay.

In keeping with that I also found a free Victorian era leaflet on using them.

I'm sure Staff-Sergt. Moss won't mind.

I find the routines in here good for warming-up and the later ones are more than challenging enough for skill developments.

I've yet to grow the pre-requisite handlebar moustache though...

Wow, I'm surprised so many people like these.
I purchased Brett Jones and Gray Cooks program around the time it came out to compliment their from the ground up and dynami material. I loved the later two, but indian clubs never did anything noticable for me.
I don't have should issues, so that may be a part of it.
I that for the time invested, i get a lot more out of Original Strength.

Clubs are cool. I have a pair of 9kg clubs and use them as warm up before heavy kettlebell or bodyweight practice.

Wow that's hardcore, my heavy set of clubs weigh less than 3kg each and they give me a good workout. I warmup with a set that weigh about 850 grams each.

Are they metal club bells or wooden ones like a Persian meel ?

I've made several sets of clubs from wood on my lathe of various sizes and the ones I use the most are just over a kilogram each.

My favourite resource for Indian clubs comes from Paul taras Wolkowinski. I've never seen anyone else do half of the stuff he does with clubs. He's also into swinging meels, axes, gadas and flags.

Towards the end of this one (about 11.15 he goes freestyle with Indian clubs and strings together some amazing moves, there's no way I could do anything like that with my heart rate near max after swinging the mils. This guy is a legend.

And for a bit of shameless patriotism
