Abs After DL

    I almost never do ab work before I deadlift.

    Today, my son and a friend were training here and I ended up doing some ab-tiring things to show them, specifically a couple of deep, straight-knees, skin-the-cats and a hanging leg raise.

    So I took 10% off the DL bar from what I had planned to lift - felt like the right thing to do.

    Hello,

    @Steve Freides
    Did they do abs as a warm-up or as a part of the training it itself ?

    Kind regards,

    Pet'

    I don't know what they usually do. I don't always train abs, just some of the time, and when I do, it's always the last thing in the session. We have a pretty full-featured, and pretty big, basement gym - my youngest, who is 20 years old, has been using it with his friends since he started high school. They call me down there when they want to ask me a question or show them a movement, but other than that, they are on their own.

    Hello,

    If memory serves, in HS Abs, Pavel advises to train abs when we do not lift or we lift slightly lighter.

    Kind regards,

    I have not generally had problems training abs, in low volume, at the end of my regular session.

    Steve,

    Slight tangent to the discussion here - how often do you have back pain post DL? I was working with a coach the other day, so I think my firm was ok, but had pain with 4th rep. Moderate pain localized lower back, not really debilitating but annoying, and more than usual soreness. I am debating how much to stick with barbell DL or maybe shift to trap bar, or lighter weight exercise still pulling from floor like power clean.

    Never. Stiffness at times, never pain.

    Hello,

    @Steve Freides
    What kind of exercises do you do ? Ab wheel ? HLR ?

    Kind regards,

    Pet'

    Thanks for feedback, I will try to adjust a bit and start back with lower intensity, but could be my back is not well suited to DL. Similar intensity low bar squat doesn't seem to bother me.

    Work with someone experienced and figure out your form. Unless you have a reason not to, DL should be an Everyman lift - bend down and pick up something. Post a video here, find a coach in person or via Skype. I wouldn't just give it up because of a problem.

    Ok, thanks for the encouragement. I will let the back heal up a bit and revisit the lift.

    @pet', when I want to work on my abs, I like standing wheel rollouts.
