On S&S I've got my 40KG getups down solid and I'm trying to transition to the 48kg.  Previous jumps from 24kg to 32kg and 32kg to 40kg were fairly easy.  Once I was solid and strong with the lower weight I was able to transition without much trouble.  Now it's so off balance that I'm having trouble going up to my elbow even without losing control.  What I have been doing the past couple days is just holding the 48kg up  while I'm on my back and try to keep it controlled for about a 5 count.  I alternate this with lighter 32kg getups for about 3 reps each side.  When I feel stable I think I'll just keep adding steps in this fashion until I'm all the way up (and down).  Is this going to do a good job building up my 48kg getup or should I try another route.

Sounds like a well thought out plan. Definitely mix it up, some days with the 40, some with the 48/32. Listen to your body and keep making progress.
