Here is my log. I put up a post and was encouraged to create a training log. Quick about me: I am 5'10, 360lbs(weight as of 03/24/2024) and I am 32 years old, almost 33. Decided to get back into working out for the first time since high school, 2009, for a few different reasons but a main one was to possibly compete in strongman. Definitely want to compete at least once in a sanctioned event for powerlifting just to officially have numbers for myself, but really see myself as more of a strongman competitor.

I am following a workout created using Black Iron Beast, the 5/3/1, with Boring But Big. I am in the end of my first week, and will recap the workouts in this first post for those and update each one thereafter.

I also have a link to my FB here- Log into Facebook
Most of my workouts get posted there and are public so you can see my form or my numbers if you wish.

Supplements taken are Sixstat Creatine X3 for every workout day. Directions state to take 3 pills prior to working out, and 3 post workout. I stay hydrated well, and on workout days I make one protein shake using MuscleMilk (vanilla, but also have chocolate just haven't tried it yet) and I use 2% milk instead of water, but add a bunch of ice to it as well.

MAXES at start of this program-
Bench - 325
OHP - 275
Squat - 450
Deadlift - 400

03/19/2024
Bench Day - Warmup with 2 sets of 10 pushups. 2 sets of 10 jumping jacks. Normal stretching.
Using the week 1 workout sheet posted below, I hit every one of my sets. I completed my AMRAP at 10 reps.
Did bicep curls as an additional workout using 30lb dumbbells(all I had easily accessible and was being lazy) will strive for higher next week.

03/21/2024
Squat Day - Warmup with 2 sets of 10 pushups. 2 sets of 10 jumping jacks. Added in deeper stretching to include palms to floor with wrist against my feet together.
Using week 1 workout sheet posted below, I hit every one of my sets with the AMRAP of 395 only doing 1 rep, then about 30 minutes later I did 2 more. Didn't feel super safe yet with doing 395 with no safety bars but much more confident now. I did 2 sets of my Bigger But boring instead of all 5 as I was gassed. Will shoot for all 5 sets next week.

OHP Day - Warmup with 2 sets of 10 pushups. 2 sets of 10 jumping jacks. Normal stretching.
Completed every one of my sets using the week 1 workout sheet, with every set up to the 205 strict pressed, then had to switch to push press. I did 5x at 165 instead of 3, only because I forgot to only do 3. I finished my AMRAP at 4x 215. I gave myself just long enough of a break between sets to load weights then did the next set, so maybe need a longer break? Did my 4 sets of 10 @ 135 push press, and finished out my Boring But Big's 5th set with 10 strict presses.

Did 10 reps @ 135 OHP(strict press) to workout the soreness in my sides. Holy CRAP my sides and tri's are on fire today. Plus note- 0 shoulder pain which blows me away as my should has ALWAYS hurt since an AC joint separation in 2008.... It has NEVER felt better than it has since I started lifting weights again

Finished my week one today. Was going to work out my bench today as well so i am on a M,W,F,Su schedule, but will be doing bench 03/26/24 to catch up.

Completed my deadlifts at 100% of my plan. I did 325 x 6 for my AMRAP, and then did the 5 sets of 10 off camera. Not gonna lie, SOOOO many fibers of my being kept telling me that was good enough, I don't need these 5 sets, but I forced myself to punch them out. I finished all 5 sets and stopped for the day. Will experiment with different positioning. Need to learn what the requirements are for local powerlifting regulations regarding hand/foot placement for deadlift(are there any??)

Proud of myself for pushing through the work even without anyone watching, I just told myself if I am even slightly serious about this I need to be honest and I was. Even if I can't finish a workout in the future, at least I'll know I did everything I could to the point of failure.

My warmup for the day was just basic stretching and a few OHP at 135 because it was still set up at the weight from yesterday. I really enjoy the feeling in my sides, super sore but I don't know if I have ever worked these muscles before lol. They are a new level of sore..
After some research they are the serratus anterior I think? Either way I like it.

Link to my video if anyone wants to see it.

OK catching up on my logs.
03/26- Week 2 of my 5/3/1 with the Bigger but Boring add on. Sets are as follows:
5 x 135, 5 x 165, 3 x 185, 3 x 235, 3 x 255, 3+(did 8 ) x 275
then 5 sets of 10 x 165
Felt strong. Gassed at the end of my BBB but definitely excited about the 8 reps of 275.
Warmups of stretching and 5 x 135 OHP.

03/28 - Squat day week 2
Final set of 3+ x 395 I did at 432lbs - my weights max out at 395 but I had old rotors lyong around and 2 weighed 18.5lbs each so that gave me 432.

Update to squat day - i am freaking dead today. My quads are fuggin dead. I feel amazing tho, as I am not HURT, just hurting. I know the work is working...

sidebar- when I did my last rep of my last set of 215, I thought my head was going to explode... super bad pain for a minute or two after... concerned, not sure what that was all about. I did try and explode out of the last rep to finish strong, so maybe I overdid something.... anyone have anything similar happen?

@theck4291 great work on the squats and bench! As for pain in the head - I have before gotten "exertion headaches" after lifting. I get a really bad headache that lasts for an hour or two. Not sure if that's what you're talking about. I'd suggest trying to not hold pressure in your cheeks, hold it in your stomach.

Sorry everyone! I got so tied up in everything else I forgot to stop back. I'll try to catch everything up below-
March 30th, 2024

Week 2 OHP day done.
Messed up and only have first set on video 1, the rest of the workout is on video 2. Finished strong with the last set by doing a continental clean and press.
I used a Fat Gripz addition on my bar to help train for axle press. Felt good, definitely feel the forearms being more sore this week than they were last week, so pretty sure it's working how it says it's supposed to.
All sets only have enough rest time to load the new weight then right back into it. When I hit my final 5 sets of 135 x 10 I gave myself about 30 seconds between sets, with the very last set about 90 seconds real-time before I started it.
All sets were strict pressed, up to my first one of 225, then I had to push press the rest. There are one or two times I didn't reach lockout, but I state this while working out and didn't count that rep and redid the rep correctly.

April 1st
Deadlift day. Didn't record entire workout. Look it over for form. Can't get the right feel still.
Workout sets
5 x 165
5 x 185
3 x 225
3 x 295
3 x 325
3 x 345
Attempted 1 x 445 - failed
Attempted 1 x 432- didn't complete but could have. If I locked it out I wouldn't have had full control back to the ground and would have set down too hard potentially damaging the concrete or weights.
5 sets of 10 x 185. Only completed 1 set at 6 reps.
I don't want to train something at high reps when I'm still unsure on form, so I completed my main workout but didn't add on the extra reps this week.

April 2nd
Bench day week 3 done. Next week I deload, retest max, then start a new cycle.
5 x 135
5 x 165
3 x 185
5 x 225
3 x 255
1+ x 295 (did 305 instead for 3 reps)
5 sets of 10 × 165
74 reps total
13,110 lbs total lifted today in under 15 minutes start to finish. Not bad

April 4th
Week 3 squat.
I did NOT want to aquat today. Did everything I could to avoid it but the wife forced me into finishing my workout.
I cut my final 5 sets of 10 at the end down by 10lbs from 215 to 205, as well as only did 3 sets. I definitely had the extra 2 sets in me, but I don't want to be as sore tomorrow as I was last week.
5 x 185
5 x 215
3 x 275
5 x 325
3 x 395 (I was spent here....)
1+ x 432(went with 445 and failed, had to drop it)
10 x 205
10 x 205
10 x 205

April 8th- multiple things happened-
Deload week
YES, I maxed out during my deload... instead of following the recommended +5 upper and +10 lower, I wanted to know my maxes and recalculate the program based on new maxed. Glad I did-
Bench PR- 355lbs

OHP PR- 305lbs

Got into stone lifting- 220lb stone found out in the woods

WORKOUT RECAP- First Cycle Completed
April 11th
First cycle 5/3/1 complete- video review.
Recap
Prior to program, push press ohp was 275 with a struggle. After program 305 went up surprisingly easy. Bench went from 325 to 355. Squat went from 450 to 482.
I WILL be sticking with this program until it no longer works for me or I plateau. I have been using creatine supplements with every workout

April 16th
Please- no grief... yes I know I should have warmed up, but I bypassed logic for ego. Either way got a deadlift PR of 482 with straps-

482lb deadlift PR.... this was a cold lift, no warm up. Truly didn't intend to be able to lift it, just wanted a feel for the straps, but then she went right up. With a warm up I would be surprised if I'm closer to 550-600 1RM.
I could have gone higher just don't have any extra weights...
Used an old dog leash, cut it and sewed up some lifting straps.

April 16th
Bench day done.
Adjusted my workout some from the program as my available weights don't match what they want me doing.
Total weight benched today-18,740lbs

5 x 135 (did this 3x because the first 2 times we tried filming got messed up)
5 x 165
3 x 205
5 x 255
5 x 275
5+ x 305 (did 5 reps)
10 x 185
10 x 185
10 x 185
