Dan John said for boxers he does a vertical press (overhead press) + vertical pull (pull up) + deadlift. He never said hinge. He said deadlift. He said do 3 sets of 3.

How does the pull up help boxers, it doesn't make sense? (3 sets of 3 isn't hypertrophy)

It builds a strong back and shoulders, which does help boxers. Boxers don't need hypertrophy.

Hello,

It will prevent from imbalances. Plus, it also makes shoulders stronger and more endurant. As mentioned above, it will also help you on the return (to get this "slap" punch). It helps to create speed, assuming you do a very explosive concentric phase on the pull up.

It can also help you during a clinch.

For instance, Lee Morrisson, who is more into self defense and combatives uses lat pull down with a rubber band (as far as the upper body pull is concerned).

Strength training will always be helpful because you can consider it as a "portion" of your power. There is a three part series on YT, from L. Morrisson:

Hello,

Here is something:

Overall, I agree with D. John. It works the big muscle groups, and it will transfer to almost every physical endeavour. However, IMHO, it lacks the transverse plan (rotation). Obviously, this will come alongside technique work, but if one wants to do a physical preparation, it may be interesting to add exercises like Palloff presses, wood chops, throwing a med ball against a wall, etc...

Kind regards,

Pet'

The premise of this thread is really misinformed....

But anyway, the lat also helps to transfer power from the lower body to the upper. Read Pavels fighter pullup program for further reference.
