It's really best if you have a foundation to build your longcycle and side press on. They're technical and nuanced. It would be like working on your purple belt before you get your blue. A great program for beginners would be Simple & Sinister. Once you have that down, you can work on your cleans and snatches. Once those are down, you can start working on your jerks. Then longcycle. It's not that it's like a step 1, step 2, step 3 kind of thing, but the movements all build on each other. i.e., I don't think cleans would ever feel right if my body didn't already understand swings. I've never tried a side press, so I can't really comment on it.
