I read an article about powerlifting  a long time ago (just recently thought about it today) that when you are bench press heavy for strength. That “high reps” triceps extensions is a great assistant exercise. Is there any truth to this or not?

John, whatever addresses your weaknesses will be a great assistance exercise.  If your triceps are what's holding you back in the BP, then by all mean, go for a hypertrophy-focused triceps assistance exercise.

high rep tricep extensions tend to be best used in a superjoints fashion --very low resistance, intended to keep the tricep tendon healthy so that you can do more productive exercises (heavy close grip bench press) more frequently.

if you're going to bench, here's your video primer. must watch, but not at work!
