From my manual :
Upon the command he will descend below parallel ("parallel" is defined as "the top surface of the leg at the hip joint lower than the top of the knee")

Basically, reach parallel and a little below, as in a powerlifting competition.
 
I think wrapping the thumb also helps to engage the lats a little more, more lats=greater scapular stability.

I thought having the thumb with the rest of the fingers promoted lat involvement more. Like on the tactical pull-ups.
