I know the main focus here at StrongFirst is strength. I love that. However, as a martial artist I also need to focus on speed in my strikes. Currently I'm not doing much to specifically train speed for the sole reason of I don't really have an idea how to approach that type of training. I've always heard of others punching while holding light weights, but I'm just not sure about it. How do you guys (and gals) approach speed training?

Relaxation + good motor programs = speed. Move slow, move soft, move with intent.  Speed will follow.  Patience, focus, breathing are key to this.

Mylan, it is a very complex topic.  Charles is right in saying that practicing relaxation is a big part.  Punching with weights must be done with very light dumbells, the size of rolls of quarters.

Thank you both for the excellent answers. Relaxation/speed coming with time is what I've always been told and have taught to others. Was just wondering if maybe there was more to it.
